    Susan Blow traveled to Germany where she observed classrooms in which young children learns language, math, and science skills through playing. She then returns to America to open the first kindergarten in 1873.

    William Edward Burghardt (W. E. B.) Du Bois graduated from Harvard and was the first African American to earn a doctorate in the United States. He the went on to become the co-founder of the National Associaiton for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP).
