Henri Poincare 1854-1912

  • Birth

    Birth
Henri Poincare was born in Cité Ducale neighborhood, Nancy, Meurthe-et-Moselle.
  • Period: to

    Primary Education

In 1862 Poincare attended the Lyce in Nancy where he proved to be one of the top students in all his courses. He graduated in 1871 with a bachelor's degree in letters and sciences.
  • Period: to

    College Years

From 1873 to 1875 Picare studied mathematics at the Ecole Polytechnic. Once again advancing in his studies he published his first paper in 1874.
  • Univeristy positon

    Univeristy positon
In 1879 Poincare began teaching mathematics as a junior lecturer at eh University of Caen.
  • Invention in Matehmatics

From 1881-1882 Poincare invents a form of mathematics known as qualitative theory of differential equations. This form of mathematics allowed for teh extrapolation of important information of a given solution without having to solve the equation. This lead to significant discoveries in celestial mechanics as well as mathematical physics.
  • French Academy of Science

At 32, Poincare was elected to the French Academy of Sciences becoming its president by 1906
  • Three Body Problem

In 1887 Poincare won a major award during a competition in which he solved the three body problem that arises from the free motion of orbiting bodies in celestial mechanics
  • Gravitational Waves

In 1905 Poincare was the first to propose the idea of gravitational waves that propagate through space at the speed of light. His hypothesis would later be confirmed by the first direct observation in 2015, 110 years later.
  • Death

In 1912, at teh age of 54, Poincare died of an embolism due to a complication during surgery.
