Along with Sony dropping the Walkman came Sony's MDL- 312 headphones. They were the first portable headphones. -

The earbuds were invented in 1980 but wouldn't become all that popular untill Steve Jobs made them mainstream. -

These headphones didn't need to be connected with a wire. They became immensily popular and expensive.
