Hatfield Raid/Animosity against the Hatfield's
Hatfield's raided the McCoy family home on New Years Day, 1888, killings daughter and son, Calvin, and burning the cabin to the ground. This caused public opinion to shift against the Hatfield's. Meanwhile Phillips lacked properly executed extradition papers. -
Unlawful arrest
West Virginia's governor sued his neighboring state for unlawful arrest of 9 prisoners and the men were returned to Kentucky. -
Roseanna and Randolph McCoy die
Roseanna, tending her mother's wounds from New Years. She grew more and more depressed and died soon after. She was less than 30 years old. -

Devil Anse dies of pneumonia.
