    Fugitive Slave Act of 1850

    This act made it illegal for people to keep slaves and not return them to thier owners. If an ecapee was spotted in any terriotory or state slave hunters went to court to prove they were a runaway. Anyone that helped them was fined $500 and was sent to jail for 6 months. This law was put down by most northern states.

    Conductor of the Underground Railroad

    She became a conductor of the Underground Railroad meaning she knew every route of the Underground Railroad and took an oath to keep it a secret. During this time she also went south to resuce her brother and friends. Thomas Garret's house was the safe house that they stayed at. He was the most famous stationmaster of the Underground Railroad.

    Trip to Canada

    She was going to get her husband John but he had already married another women and wasn't going to leave. She went back to Thomas Garret's house and rescued more runaways, also known as passengers. They went to Frederick Douglas' house and he saved up enough money for them to go to Canada where blacks and whites lived happily together.

    She made 11 trips from 1852 to 1857. During these years was one of her most famous trips. This is because a passenger was very sacred so he wanted to turn around and go home. Harriet was afraid he'd tell people everything he knew about the railroad. So considering this she made hm change his mind by pointing a gun to his head and saying "dead folks don't tell no tales."

    She was ready to return to the U.S. to help more runaway slaves during the winter of 1852. She worked in Canada to save enough money to do this.

    Daring Trip

    This was the most daring trip she ever took. It was to rescue her father, Ben Ross, and free him, She bought a train ticket and road it to Caroline County. When she reached her destination she bought a horse and some parts to make a buggy. This would get her parents to Thomas Garret's house who would help them to Canada. While in Canada she met a famous abolitionist, John Brown, who had heard about her. He called her "General Tubman" and said she was one of the best and bravest persons ever.

    She wanted to help a free slave who had been captured and beging held at the United States Commisioner office. His name was Charles Nalle and had been free becuase of Harriet in the first place. He finally bought his way out of being a slave.

    She had moved back to the U.S. and the Civil War had started. She became a nurse in the Civil War. She worked at a hospital in Hilton Head, South Carolina untill she was moved to a hospital in Florida. She also worked at Fort Monroe where she impressed Jefferson Davis with her work.

    Spies

    She worked with Colonel James Montgomery as a scout. Later she put together a group of spies who imformed him about slaves who might want to join the Union Army. She helped him put together the Combahee River Raid in which they were going to harass whites and get freed slaves. They got about 500 freed slaves.

    She married Naleson Davis after returning home to Auburn. They were married 19 years and it was a calm and peacful marriage unlike her first one. They were only married 19 years because Nelson Davis died during thier marriage,

    She purchased 7 acres of land and built a house of bricks there. They could buy and build the house because Sarah Bradford gave her $1,200. The house of Nelson Davis and Harriet Tubman still remains on the same property it was built on.

    Susan B. Anthony wrote a note about Harriet. They were fighting for women's rights.

    Before dying she decided to give her home to the Methodist Episcopal Zion Church for the elderly. She was burried in Fort Hill Cemetery.
