Haiti's food shortage

  • Military blockade

    Natural disasters aren't the entire reason for the countries food shortages. In 1991 the Clinton administration imposed an economic blockade. This further impoverished the already struggling nation.
  • Hurricane Gordon

    Hurricane Gordon caused 147 deaths and massive flooding. Floods from the torrential rain fall demolished the crop. on top of those displaced, 167,000 Haitians were displaced from their homes. This is a recurring theme year after year.
  • 2008 storms

    Tropical storm Fay and hurricanes Gustav, Hanna, and Ike all ravished the country in 2008. The heavy rains kept the small island nation flooded for the majority of the year.
  • 2010 Earthquake

    A 7.0 magnitude earthquake strikes Port-au-Prince, the country's capital killing about 180,000 people. Would the death toll be less if the capital's structures were made with earthquakes in mind and people had proper housing? yes. The country is so poor and events like this only keep them down, keeping proper food supplies out of reach for most of the country.
