    The Persian Wars

    The Persian Empire tried to conquer Greece 3 times but ultimately failed. The Persian Empire wanted their revenge after the Athenians helped one of their colonies residing in the Persian Empire, specifically in Anatolia, rebel against Persian rule. Darius put down the revolt and vowed to defeat Athens. Greeks won the Persian Wars. The Greeks sank 1/3 of Persian fleet in an important battle, the Battle of Salamis. As a result, Athens becomes very wealthy and powerful.

    Golden Age

    During the Golden Age, Athens became very wealthy and powerful as the leader of the Delian League after the Persian Wars. Athens economic prosperity led to the Golden Age of culture (sculpture, theater, philosophy, and democracy.) The Golden Age occurred between the Persian Wars and the Peloponnesian Wars. Pericles was the leader of Athens during the Golden Age (he increased democracy, created the strongest navy, and Athens was made beautiful, the Parthenon was built.

    Peloponnesian War

    Athens became too powerful as leader of the Delian League. It built a powerful navy and trading empire. Some of the Greek city-states wanted to leave the Delian League now that the Persian threat is one, and many resent the harsh Delian League membership fees. Sparta created the Peloponnesian War to counter the Delian League. Pericles, brings all the citizens behind the citys wall for protection. Athens got a plague in the 2nd year in which 1/3rd of the population dies, Sparta wins!

    Alexander the Great defeats Persia and Egypt

    After the Greek city-states were weakened from the Peloponnesian Wars, Phillip the II, King of Macedonia (Alexander the Great's father) conquered Greece. Phillip the II of Macedonia died at his daughters wedding, making Alexander the Great king at age 20. Alexander was well-educated and well-trained as a military officer. He was tutored by the philosopher, Aristotle and had gone on many millitary ventures with his father. Alexander conqured Greece and the Persian Empire.
