Gov Civil Rights Timeline

  • Dred Scott v. Sandford

    Dred Scott lived in Illinois. He was living in a free state. His previous master refused to call him a free man. Scott had bought property that made him and declared a free man. He took Sandford to court and won.
  • 13th amendment

    There shall be no more slavery. Serving under someone else as punishment is fine but only as punishment.
  • 14th Amendment

    All natural born in the US are citizens. Includes former slaves and guaranteed all citizens.
  • 15th Amendment

    African American men now have the right to vote. Voting can’t be denied because of race, color, or previous condition of servitude.
  • White Primaries

    Used to discriminate against minority voters.
  • Plessy v. Ferguson

    was a landmark decision of the US Supreme court that upheld the constitutionality of racial segregation
  • 19th Amendment

    Granted Women right to vote
  • Poll Taxes

    a tax that levied on every adult without reference to income or resources
  • Brown v. Board of Education

    Racial segregation in public schools are unconstitutional
  • Affirmative Action

    method of redressing discrimination that had persisted in spite of civil rights laws and constitutional guarantees
  • Civil Rights Act of 1964

    Ended segregation in public places and banned employment discrimination on the basis of race, color, religion, sex or national origin.
  • 24th Amendment

    Poll tax was eradicated by this amendment. No one is charged by poll tax and no poll tax can be implemented.
  • Voting Rights Act of 1965

    Signed in by President Johnson prevented states from keeping African Americans from voting
  • Reed v. Reed

    Equal protection case that said administrators of estates can’t be named in a way that discriminates between sexes
  • Equal Rights Amendment

    proposed amendment to grant equal rights to all citizens regardless of sex
  • Regents of the University of California v. Bakke

    a university’s use of racial “quotas” in its admissions process was unconstitutional
  • Bowers v. Hardwick

    Michael Hardwick was observed by a Georgia police officer while engaging in the act of consensual homosexual sodomy with another adult in the bedroom of his home.
  • Americans with disabilities act

    Prohibits the discrimination against individuals with disabilities
  • Lawrence v. Texas

    criminalized same sex intimacy in Texas
  • Obergefell v. Hodges

    All states are required to issue licenses to same sex couples
