    The Great Depression was in full effect and women needed to feed and care for their families under a low budget. They had to cheat their way to save money, buy clothes and buy food for their families. With fewer jobs available, employers generally preferred to give them to men. Some technologies like radio and telephones allowed for expanding job opportunities for women. Because women were paid considerably less than men, these industries hired women for many of the new jobs.

    Men had to go to war and women had to take over their work. Women fought for the right to join the army, and they were allowed to join sports they were once forbidden. Women responded to work differently depending on age, race, class marital status, and the number of children. Half of the women who took war jobs were minority and lower-class women who were already in the workforce. They switched from lower-paying traditionally female jobs to higher- paying factory jobs.

    Women's role were greatly changed in the 1950s, with the men coming back from war taking their jobs back. By 1957, 70% of working women held factory positions, assembly lines or service jobs. 12% held a profession and 6% held management positions. Those that held professional jobs worked as nurses and teachers. Many of the ads in the magazines and T.V. shows were showing women with the role of motherhood. These ads often show women with their arms filled with cooked food.

    More females than ever were entering the paid workforce, and this increased the dissatisfaction among women regarding huge gender disparities in pay and advancement and sexual harassment at the workplace. By the end of the 60s, more than 80 percent of wives of childbearing age were using contraception after the federal government in 1960 approved a birth control pill. This freed many women from unwanted pregnancy and gave them many more choices, and freedom, in their personal lives.

    The women's rights movement made significant changes in the 1970s and took a prominent role within society. Among these battles were challenging sexism, fighting for free access to legal abortion, and analyzing and overcoming oppression. The proportion of women in state legislatures tripled. Women surpassed men in college enrollment in 1979. However, the rising divorce rate left an increasing number of women single and forced more into poverty.

    During the 1980s, important individual woman were making their mark in history. Sandra Day O’Connor was named the first woman justice of the Supreme Court. Sally Ride becomes the first U.S. woman in space as well. Geraldine Ferraro became the first woman nominated by a major political party to run for the vice president of the U.S. Furthermore, Florence Griffith Joyner set a world record in the 200-meter sprint at the Olympics. Women were earning some impressive titles.

    During the 1990s, the World Wide Web was created, sparking the Internet revolution. The U.S. Department of Labor established the Glass Ceiling Commission so that no qualified woman would be blocked from advancements in the workplace. They were even allowed to have a Take Our Daughters to Work Day to introduce the workplace to young girls.

    Being a women in the 21st Century was means that they could vote, they could hold a office position within the political and government world. Women have the opportunity to choose what she would like to do for a career. There is a law that states that employers can't discriminate based on sex. They are independent in terms of doing things for themselves, like working of furthering their education. This picture shows what the roles of a women should be.
