Gender, as seen on Television

  • In the 1940's

    Woman are seen as ignorant, helpless, with bodies that are thin and curvy, and belong at home. Men are always seen as intelligent, the providers, with bodies that are strong and tall.
  • In the 1950's

    Portrays the typical 50's family. Mothers have thin waist with curves in the appropriate areas, cooking in the kitchen.
  • In the 1960's

    Bodies of the different genders are highly distinctive; small waist, curves, frilly dresses, Males husky with a gruff look. Woman nurture, clean. Males always involved in adeventures.
  • In the 1970's

    Guys are strong, sexual, into cars, one track mind. (Girls) Females, pink ladies, petite, superficial, into pampering themselves, top priority being boys.
  • In the 1980's

    Women started hosting television shows. The 80's often featured female characters in central roles.
  • In 2000

    Kim Possible Cheerleader by day, thin. Female super hero by night, saves the world. Weak, clumsy, male side-kick. Not the typical gender roles but a break through from to social norm.
