  • Mills v. Board of Education of the District of Colombia (1972)

    A case against the District of Columbia that declared that students with disabilities must be given a public education, regardless of the cost to provide it. This case set a precedent that educational service must be given based on children ‘s needs, not of the schools’ financial capabilities. Reinforced the right of all children with disabilities to a free public education.
  • Burlington School Committee v. Department of Education (1984)

    Parents of a special needs child placed their child in a private school after believing that he was not receiving an appropriate in the education in the public schools. The Supreme Court recognized the authority of the court to grant retroactive reimbursement of private school tuition.
  • Honigv. Doe (1988)

    Two emotionally disturbed students were suspended indefinitely for violent and disruptive conduct relate to their disabilities, pending the completion of the expulsion proceeding by the district. Court ruled that students whose misbehavior is related to their disability cannot be denied education.
