French Revolution Timeline

  • Unrest in France

    France started to have unrest by bad harvests, high prices, and disturbing questions of the Enlightenment.
  • Economic Troubles

    France faced economic troubles, mainly with the Third estate where merchants were located. The cost of living was super high and bad weather caused crop failures, and shortage of grain.
  • Sinking into debt

    France started to fall to debt as King Louis XVI and his wife Marie Antoinette spended large amounts of money on gowns, jewels, gambling, etc.
  • Estates-General Assembly

    When King Louis XVI had no money left he wanted to impose taxes on nobility. The Second Estate ordered for a meeting at Versailles were all three estates to approve of the new tax.
  • National Assembly

    The Third Estate voted on establishing the National Assembly in order to end with absolute monarchy and to start a representative democracy.
  • Louis XVI and family fleeing

    Louis XVI and his family were warned about being in danger, and every supporter left France. The king tried to flee with his family to the Austrian Netherlands, but were stopped at the border and sent back to Paris.
  • Limited Monarchy

    The new constitution was completed and king Louis XVI had approved.This constitution was about a limited constitutional monarchy and also created a legislative assembly. This assembly could create laws and approve or reject wars.
  • France at War

    A war started between France and Prussians. The commander wanted to destroy Paris if anyone harmed the royal family.
  • War continues in France

    Great Britain, Holland, and Spain joined Prussia and Austria to fight against France. These were lot's of countries against one, so France faced lot's of defeats.
  • End of Terror

    When Robespierre (dictator of France) was sent to the guillotine to get executed the suffering had ended. A new type of government was discussed in the National Convention.
