North Korea invades South Korea
This invasion became the first military action of the Cold War. Trying to keep South Korea a democratic place the United States joined the war on their behalf to contain communism. This was showing the highest casualties being displayed on live television with no hopes of victory in the distance. -
22nd Amendment
The amendment limited the presidency terms.The president can only be in office for two terms for 4 years each. Anymore after that would be a violation of the law.

The First Explorer 1 Satellite Launch
U.S. Army Ballistic Missile Agency launched a satellite using it's Jupiter C Rocket. The job is completed in less than 3 months. The main instrument on it was the cosmic ray detector to measure radiation. -
Berlin Wall
The wall was the main focus point to separate communism and democracy. It defined the Cold War. The wall separated East Berlin and West Berlin.

John Glenn becomes the first U.S. astronaut to orbit earth. He became a national hero. He also was a member of the firs group of astronauts. -
My Lai Massacre
American soldiers open fired on innocent people that they assume were the Viet Cong. Army commanders advised their soldiers to even kill Viet Cong sympathizers. No shots were fired at the Charlie Company.

Shirley Chisholm
She was the first female and only black female to run for presidency. Along with that milestone, she became a national symbol for the first African-American Party. Not winning the candidacy she received more than 150 votes from the democratic party. -
National Black Feminist Organization
The organization focused on sexism and racism faced by black women. Their first meeting took place in New York City, with Margaret Sloan as chairwoman of the organization. Their main contributor was Shirley Chisholm. -

Jimmy Carter was sworn in as the 39th President. He is a part of the Democratic party. He did only one term in office and lost reelection.

Space shuttle Challenger explodes about 73 sec after liftoff. All the crew members were killed. It was the worst accident in U.S space history. -
Iraqi troops invade Kuwait
Kuwait government leaders fled to Saudi Arabia. Iraqi took control of 20% of the world's oil reserves. The invasion led the Persian Gulf war.
