Although they had been disbanded during the Reconstruction Era, the KKK mad a reemergence after WWI, lasting through all of the Civil Rights Movement. This organization of native-born, Protestant, White Supremecists is responsible for countless hate crimes towards African Americans, including lynching. In 1955, Elvis Presley jumpstarted his career with the release of 'Heartbreak Hotel', his first Number one hit. Although he did not invent the genre, Presley soon became known as the 'King of Rock n' Roll', as his music greatly impacted society and reshaped the attitude and style of many American teenagers. Stand in the Schoolhouse Door
After the segregation of schools was outlawed, Governor George Wallace of Alabama stood in the schoolhouse door of the University of Alabama to 'block' two black students from entering. The two students were surrounded by a mob of angry white protestors as they were escorted into the building. -
March on Washington
Organized by A. Philip Randolph and Bayard Rustin, the March on Washington was a protest rally of 200,000 people to advocate for better jobs and freedom for African Americans and was designed to pressure the government into desegregating armed forces. This is where Martin Luther King Jr. gave his famous "I Have a Dream" speech. A primary factor in the passage of the Civil Rights Act of 1964.

US Enters Vietnam War
The United States entered the Vietnam in order to push its foreign policy goals of containment during the Cold War. Although the war was between the communists of Northern Vietnam and Rebels of South Vietnam, it soon became a proxy war between the US and the Soviet Union. Involvement in the war sparked a wave of protests from people who believed the war was against the morals of the US.

Founding of the Black Panther Party
The Black Panther Paty was found by Huey P. Newton and Bobby Seale. The organization encouraged the arming of African Americans for self-defense and strived to combat the rising rates of police brutality and oppression towards blacks. The Panthers dressed in black leather jackets and berets and organized armed citizen patrols in Major US Cities. (Key Concept 8.2.I.A)

The founders of Apple are Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak, two college dropouts. Their goal was to create a computer that is accessible and easy to use in homes and offices. Their first product was the Apple I Personal Computer. -
Watergate Scandal
Five men working for President Nixon's were arrested for breaking into the Democratic National Convention Headquarters at the Watergate complex in Washington DC, and Nixon had full knowledge of what was going on. The investigation of this scandal would have lead to the impeachment of Nixon, had he not resigned from office himself.

Ronald Reagan Elected Into Office
Ronald Reagan won the election of 1980 with a ground sweeping defeat against incumbent democrat Jimmy Carter. His platform consisted of increasing tariffs and military spending, and he did not support abortion rights, LGBT rights, or protests against Vietnam. Reagan was mainly endorsed by Evangelicals.

AIDS Epidemic
The AIDS epidemic in the US was caused by HIV, and was first found in young gay men in 1981. In 1982, the CDC used the term AIDS to describe the disease. Since it was most commonly found in homosexual men, AIDS became known as the "gay plague", and the LGBT community faced severe discrimination as a result. President Reagan's lack of action regarding the crisis furthered culture battles in the US.

Americans With Disabilities Act Passed
This was a landmark law signed into effect by President George H.W. Bush that would prohibit discrimination against people with physical and mental disabilities. One of the main groups that benefited from this Act were war veterans who struggled with PTSD or were handicapped.
