Fetal Development

  • Week 1

    The first week of pregnancy is a womans last menstrual cycle. The uterus thickens to prepare to fertilize the egg.
  • Week 2

    Week 2
    The egg attaches to the wall of the uterus. With the sperm, the egg begins to fertilize.
  • Week 3

    Week 3
    The sperm and egg merge into one single cell. Chronozones inside the cell start deciding the baby's personality such as hair and eye color.
  • Week 4

    The ammonitic sac starts to form around the baby to protect it while he/she grows. Cells also divide to create the organs for the baby.
  • Week 5

    Week 5
    The placenta begins to develop and a fibrin clot closes the hole to the uterus. The embryo grows to 2mm and gets oxygen and nutrition through the placenta.
  • Week 6

    Week 6
    The baby's heart begins to beat. The brain is also divided into five sections and they eyes start to form.
  • Week 7

    Week 7
    Arms and legs begin to form. The organs and facial features are being formed as well.
  • Week 8

    Week 8
    The arms and legs continue to grow and develop elbows and toes. He/she also starts to move.
  • Week 9

    Week 9
    The heart finishes forming and the nose and upper lip is being formed.
  • Week 10

    Week 10
    The baby is now a fetus. The neck begins to shape and the mouth cavity and the nose are joined together.
  • Week 11

    Week 11
    The fetus is able to swallow and move tongue. The fingers and toes are also separated from each other and the baby is sensitive to touch.
  • Week 12

    Week 12
    The finger and toenails start to show. The fetus can now move more spontaneously and can get the hiccups.
  • Week 13

    Week 13
    The baby starts to kick and can open and close its mouth. It is almost possible to see if it is a boy or girl.
  • Week 14

    The fetus starts urinating and the ears are finished developing. Hair also starts to appear on the skin.
  • Week 15

    Week 15
    The bones and muscles continue to develop and the skin is very thin.
  • Week 16

    The baby learns how to breathe and is able to hear outside voices.
  • Week 17

    Week 17
    Fat begins to form under the skin. The eyes stay closed but are looking forward.
  • Week 18

    The baby is able to hear sounds and can be startled. The vernix forms around the skin to protect it.
  • Week 19

    Week 19
    The genitals are recognizable! Hair has also appeared on the scalp.
  • Week 20

    Week 20
    Halfway through pregnancy. The baby can recognize their mothers voice and the skin is thicker.
  • Week 21

    The fetus has almost all of the nourishment it needs and starts absorbing small amounts of sugar.
  • Week 22

    A regular sleep schedule forms. Taste buds start to form.
  • Week 23

    The baby weighs about a pound. The baby turns from side to side and almost flips inside the womb regularly.
  • Week 24

    Week 24
    The lungs form the respiratory branches and the baby practices breathing.
  • Week 25

    The brain quickly grows and brain cell develop. The sex organs finish developing.
  • Week 26

    The eyes start to open. The brain will start to respond to touch and is more active.
  • Week 27

    Week 27
    The baby has eyebrows and eyelashes and the eyes can blink.
  • Week 28

    Milk teeth have developed under the gums. The hair is more visible and the eyes move more often.
  • Week 29

    The brain is developing neurons. The muscles and lunch continue to mature and the fetus can respond to pain.
  • Week 30

    Week 30
    The skin becomes smoother. The baby is heavier and controls its own body temperature,
  • Week 31

    The baby can respond to light. The lungs and digestive system are maturing.
  • Week 32

    The fat layer under the skin thickens. The baby wont move as much because of lack of space.
  • Week 33

    Week 33
    The baby gains some weight and looses his/her baby fuzz. He/she is also using it's lungs to practice breathing.
  • Week 34

    The fingernails are completely formed and the eyes completely open when awake.
  • Week 35

    Week 35
    The baby's lungs are almost fully developed. If they were born now, they have a high chance of survival.
  • Week 36

    The baby gains about 6 pounds. He/she may drop into the birth canal.
  • Week 37

    Baby weighs about 7 pounds and the water could break at any time.
  • Week 38

    Week 38
    The baby has finished developing and may reach final birth position.
  • Week 39

    The baby is in its final birth position and continue to kick and punch. The baby fuzz has completely fell off.
  • Week 40

    Week 40
    The baby is ready to be delivered.
