Erikson Timeline (Harriet Walter)

  • Period: to

From ages 1-3, Harriet was a rebellious child.

She rarely obeyed her parents' & preferred to roam on her own. Erikson's autonomy vs. shame/doubt stage further describes the reasoning behind her preferred childhood actions. Its theme is based of off a toddler's efforts toward independence. Children during this age will decide that they want to choose their own clothing & begin to dress themselves. If they are denied of this opportunity, they will develop low self-esteem. Harriet fortunately was not restricted and lived a life of high esteem.

By the time a person hits their 20s, they should be ready to share their life with somebody else (according to Erikson's intimacy vs. isolation stage). However, Harriet was too busy with her actress & activist career to engage into a serious relationship. According to Erikson, this can occur when other stages have not yet been fulfilled. Harriet had a happy childhood, with everything handed to her on a silver platter, but she moved too fast throughout it and wasn't ready to commit.

Generativity is the state of being concerned about people other than yourself or your family members. An example of this is when an elder person randomly begins to talk to you when in the market and somehow ends up giving you a life lesson that he hopes you will carry through your own life. Stagnation can be described as a state of settling of emotional stability towards the remaining of that mid-adult's life.

In other words, Harriet and Guy were both at an equilibrium of peace in their lives. They just wanted to commit to someone who they could spend the rest of their time with, after a whole life of both good and regrettable times. The couple looked at life, and the younger people in it, through eyes of an elder with wisdom and experience. They both had their moments and were ready to settle, as described in Erikson's generativity vs. stagnation stage.

At the age of 60, Harriet married to her first husband, Guy, whom was 61. It being both her and her husband's first marriage, they were fearful. Although, the couple lived a happy marriage thanks to the fact that they were in their mid-life, according to Erikson's generativity vs. stagnation stage.
