    Hopper's last struggle

In the 1940s and 1950s, Hopper found himself losing critical favor in the wake of Abstract Expressionism. Artits such as Willem de Kooning, Jackson Pollock and Mark Rothko advanced audacious formal inventions in a search for significant content and suceeded.
But Hopper continues to paint as usual. Even if he fell into mental illness, he didn't want to be corrected because art came from who the artist was in every way.
  • Edward Hopper's death

He died in 1967 ; Hopper had been reclaimed as a major influence by a new generation of American realist artists.
