    The 13 colonies declared their independence from England on July 4, 1776.

    The war ended in 1783 when British troops finally retreated to England, leaving the United States as a free country.

    The United States Constitution was then adopted in 1787

    The North and the South went to war in 1861.

    As a result of the North’s victory in the Civil War, slavery was officially abolished in December 1865 and the nation eventually returned to peace.
