    Mae Jemison was born at Decatur General Hospital in Decatur, Alabama. She was Born on October 17, 1956. She was the third child of Dorothy and Charlie Jemison. She was the youngest of her two siblings; Ricky and Ada Sue.
  • Mae Jemison's Mother

    Mae Jemison’s mother Dorothy Jemison taught Mae about perseverance and life long learning. Dorothy Jemison taught Mae that while going back to school and raising three kids at the same time. Having her mother do this helped her learn to never give up and push yourself to do new things.

    In kindergarden, the teacher asked Mae what she wanted to be when she grew up. Mae said that she wanted to be a scientist; and the teacher was slightly taken aback. In 1961, being a scientist was not a possibility for a colored girl. The teacher replied by saying, "Don't you mean you want to be a nurse?"

    President John F. Kennedy was murdered while riding a motorcade in Dallas, Texas. It happened at 12:30 P.M. on Friday, November 22,1963. Many films and photo's captured the assassination. J.F.K. Was rushed to Parkland Hospital where he was pronounced dead around 1 P.M. THe person that murdered him was Lee Harvey Oswald.

    Martin Luther King Jr. was standing on his balcony of his motel room. It happened at 6:01 P.M. at the Lorrain Motel in Memphis, TN. He was shot in the neck and jaw. A man was arrested because he was thought to be th murderer. Many people including Martin Kuther King Jr.'s family thought that man was innocent.

    In Mae's first year of college, when she would ask questions in her chemistry class, her professor would ignore her. Her professor would also act like she was dumb fro asking questions. He wouldn't ever answer her. This made Mae very timid, so she stopped asking questions and started sitting in the back of the room.

    Ricky And Ada Sue taught Mae how to apply to college and get scholarships. They also taught her how to study, and avoid parental wrath. They also taught her how to have fun. The most important thing they taught her was how to make good grades.

    Mae’s Uncle Louis always talked about Einstein. Sometimes the things that Uncle Louis would say would be very big word’s, and very confusing information. When he would talk like this she learned that she could understand anything. This helped her in Medical school when there were big words and information she didn’t understand.

    Dr. Mae Jemison was awarded, with the Johnson Publishing Trail Blazers Award. She won this in 1992 after her spaceflight. It was presented to her by Nichelle Nichols who plays Lt. Uhra, in Star Trek. Mae was presented to this award in Los Angeles, California.

    Mae Became the First Women of Color to Travel Into Space
    In September 1992, Dr. Mae Jemison become the first woman of color to travel into space! Mae went through a lot of medical tests before she was accepted. At first she didn't pass the medical tests because she had a heart murmur. Afterwards a cardiologist examined her and said it was only a "flow murmur" so she was ok to go. A couple of weeks later, she got a call from N.A.S.A. saying that she was officially going to be an astronaut.
