    President Harry S. Truman wrote this doctrine that stated that the U.S. will give money to countries like Turkey and Greece to fight off communism
  • Marshall Plan

    Marshall Plan
    The U.S. secretary of state, George Marshall, came up with this plan which was to give money to European countries to help their economy which was affected by WWII. This was done so that other countries would have a good opinion about the U.S. and then in the future they will trade and ally themselves with the U.S.

    The Berlin Airlift
    After Stalin blocks all of western Berlin, the U.S. responded by flying into Berlin to supply them with food and other needs. This continued for a year until the Soviets gave up and opened up Berlin again.

    Stalin tries to keep Berlin communist because it was on Soviet ground. He blocked the railroads and highways in order to prevent the western Allies from spreading democratic ideas.

    Due to much tension among countries, the United States, Canada, and nine other countries formed the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. This group was made to help and protect another country if they are being attacked.

    Communist take over China
    In China, a civil war break out between the Nationalist lead by Jiang Jieshi, and the communist lead by Mao Zedong. The U.S. highly supported the nationalist, but the Soviets supported the communist party. In the end, the communist won and so China turns into a communist country.

    Korea was divided into two, the north being communist and the south being democratic. North Korea attempted to invade South Korea but the United states entered as well as China. the two countries eventually called a cease-fire.

    North Vietnam wanted to take over of South Vietnam and make it communist. the U.S. joined the battle and sent troops to fight off the rebels in the south. In the end, the north conquered the south and Vietnam was one communist country.

    Revolt in Hungary
    Hungary fights off the Soviets from their country and build a new democratic government with Imre Nagy as their leader. Later on the Soviets return and take control of the country again

    Sputnik
    During the space race, the Soviet Union was developing new technology to beat the U.S. in the race and so built the first Earth satellite. This gave them a great advantage to win the race.

    The leader of communist China, Mao Zedong, wanted to improve China to compete with other countries. He expected more food to be made and more industrialization to happen, but due to poor planning by the government, it was a failure. Many people didn't eve now how to plant properly and lied about how many crops they have collected and later o died due to a food crisis.

    The U.S. was trying to beat the Soviets on who could get to the moon first and so they created this program to make a space ship that could transport people to the moon and return them safely.

    Cuban Missile Crisis
    After Fidel Castro enters into power in Cuba, the U.S. attempts to overthrow him to avoid Cuba turning into a communist country. The U.S. later finds out that the Soviets were building missiles in Cuba and demanded them to remove the missiles.

    After China converts in to a communist country, it starts making changes like distributing land to everyone, having everyone work and gain the same pay, and everyone lived in communes and together worked to grow crops.

    The government in Czechoslovakia wanted a democratic government and so they began doing that but the Soviets opposed of it and invaded it to keep it from becoming democratic.
