Cold War

1945

The U.S. was involved in the Cold war, and so was the U.S.S.R. Cold War is a state of tension between two countries. It is also, without any fighting. It took place in 1945-1989. This event was important because, the U.S.S.R wanted communism while the U.S. wanted democracy. The Cold War impacted the politics because it was communism vs. democracy.

Jackie Robinson

1947

Jackie Robinson became the first African American player in the Major Baseball League. He played for the Brooklyn Dodgers. His family and him received threats. He moved and went to high school in California. He became a Major League Baseball player in 1947. Jackie Robinson impacted society because, his number was 42 and it has been every single major league baseball team.

NATO/Warsaw Pact

1949

The Soviet Union was involved in the NATO/ Warsaw Pact. NATO was the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. The Warsaw pact was the Soviet Union's military alliance that was set up against NATO. It took place in 1949, and the headquarters were in Brussels, Belgium. These were an important events, because they would help one another if attacked. NATO/Warsaw pact impacted the economy because they were military alliances.

Elvis

1956

Elvis Presley was the King of Rock 'N Roll. He became popular because he went on the Ed Sullivan Show. He was drafted by the U.S. Army. He lived at Graceland in Memphis, TN. He was the King of Rock 'N Roll from 1956 to 1973. He had 94 gold singles and 40 gold albums & starred in 33 films. Elvis impacted the society. He gave $1,000 to 50 charities each year.

MLK Assassination

1968

James Earl Ray was the assonant of MLK. James shot MLK with a "Remington Game Master" rifle. Ray was captured in London, 2 months after. MLK was assassinated in Memphis TN, 1968. This event was important because he supported the Civil Rights Movement. MLK assassination impacted the society because, the Civil Rights Movement ended when he was assassinated.

Robert F. Kennedy Assassination

1968

Robert F. Kennedy was JFK's brother. Robert was walking through the kitchen. Sirhan Sirhan assassinated Robert. It took place on June 4, 1968 in LA at the Ambassador Hotel. This event led to secret service protection for all of the future major Presidential candidates. The assassination of Robert F. Kennedy impacted the politics, because he was an US senate.

Nixon/Watergate

1972

5 men broke in the Democratic Party Headquarters, and Nixon covered up the truth. The 5 men were caught because the door was kept slightly open. They were linked to Nixon. Nixon had made secret tapes. The burglary took place in Washington D.C. on June 17, 1972. In July 1974, Nixon was impeached. Nixon/Watergate impacted the politics because Nixon was a president of the US.

Ronald Reagan

1980

Ronald Reagan was a president of the US. He was a governor of California before. He was also, a movie star. He was a president of the US from 1980-1988. He put the first woman justice on the Supreme Court and he nominated 5 justices. Ronald Reagan impacted the economy because he cut taxes. It was called Reagonmies.

Persian Gulf War

1991

Saddam Hussein sent 100,000 troops into Kuwait. United Nation launched an air attack. It was called, “Desert Storm.” This event took place in 1991 in Saudi Arabia. It was important to prevent Iraq from spreading its influence in the Middle East. It impacted the economy because it cost billions of dollars to rebuild. Including $700 million to clean up the oil spill.

Iraq/Afghanistan Wars

2001

War in Iraq and Afghanistan was started by president George W. Bush and the British president Tony Blair. US found no evidence of weapons of mass destruction. It led to an occupation of Iraq and Afghanistan American troops for over a decade. These wars took place in Iraq and Afghanistan and started in 2001-2003. It was important because there was a possibility of Iraq employing weapons of mass destruction. The wars impacted society because there was violence between the Shiite and Sunni Muslims.

Hurricane Katrina/Harvey

2005

Katrina and Harvey were two hurricanes. Katrina caused the death of 1,833 people a,d Harvey 15 people. They were both in category 4. Katrina took place in New Orleans in 2005. Harvesy took place in Houston, Texas in 2017. Katrina was the costliest hurricane in US. Harvey caused structural damage, uprooted trees and roads. Hurricane Katrina and Harvey impacted society because Katrina damaged 150,000 homes. Harvey damaged 12,700 homes.
