    Harry S. Truman Presidency

    The Cold War began under Truman's watch. Harry S. Truman introduced The Truman Doctrine which was against Communism. Truman was for containment so Communism would not spread.

    The Truman Doctrine started the Cold War. It was a statement that said the US wanted containment of communism. It was new for the US. Before we were not intervening to stop communism and now Truman said we would.

    This is when JFK was the president of the United States. JFK increased and decreased tensions and problems of the Cold War. He increased the tensions in the Cold War he built up nuclear missiles when Russia did. He decreased tensions by signing the Limited Nuclear Test Ban Treaty.

    John F. Kennedy Presidency

    John F. Kennedy both increased and decreased tensions during the Cold War. He increased tension by building up US missiles in response to Russia building up theirs. He later signed the Limited Nuclear Test Ban Treaty to decrease tension.
  • Construction of the Berlin Wall

    Construction of the Berlin Wall
    The reason the Berlin Wall was built was to block movement between the Soviet sector and the western sector of Berlin. The Berlin Wall stood as a symbol of the Cold War division of East from West Germany and of eastern from western Europe. The Fall of the Berlin Wall was inadvertently sparked by the reform policies of Soviet leader, Mikhail Gorbachev.

    SALT II Treaty
    SALT II was a treaty created in talks between United States and USSR trying to stop nuclear weapons. It wasn't ratified by the USA senate. But it was followed until 1986. Reagan followed the terms of the treaty because he thought it was good for both countries.

    Mikhail Gorbachev

    Gorbachev was the general secretary of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union (CPSU) from 1985 to 1991 and he was president of the Soviet Union from 1990–91. He helped to end the Cold War. He met with President Ronald Reagan and signed the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty. He was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize.

    Mikhail Gorbachev in Office

    He was the general secretary of the Communists in the Soviet Union (CPSU) from 1985 to 1991 and he was the president of the Soviet Union from 1990–91. He worked to reform Communism in Russia and to make it more democratic. In 1990 he was given the Nobel Peace Prize for helping end the Cold War.

    Chernobyl was a terrible nuclear accident that happened in the USSR. When it happened, many people lost trust in nuclear power and safety. People also lost faith in the leaders of the USSR who didn't keep them safe.

    START Treaty Signed
    This was a treaty between the USA and the USSR on the reduction and limitation of strategic offensive arms. It was important to ending the Cold War. START resulted in removing 80 percent of all strategic nuclear weapons in existence.
