Cold War Timeline- Annah Folk

  • Emergence of the Cold War

The Cold war began in 1947. It began with the Korean war, where the USSR had backed North Korea and the USA South Korea.
  • Vietnam War

The Vietnam War would be the first time the United States of America would lose a war. Many people can argue that a cause of this loss was the lack of support back home, another could be their inexperience with guerrilla warfare and the terrain they fought on. The war was fought ,on the American side, against communism. The war started in 1955 and ended in 1975 The country split into Communist North-Vietnam and non-Communist South-Vietnam.
  • Cuban Missile Crisis

In 1962, the US had found missiles in Cuba belonging to the USSR. The US demanded they be taken out, the Soviets refused. The Soviets said unless they took their missiles out of Turkey, the Soviet missiles will stay in Cuba. Kennedy ended up making a deal with Khrushchev after the US conducted a 'containment' of Cuba. The Soviet missiles were taken out of Cuba and the American missiles remained in Turkey. This was a huge loss and embarrassment for Khrushchev.
  • Management of the Cold War 1963-1989

Peaceful co-existence was introduced and a real effort to not have all out nuclear war-fare was seen from the countries leaders.
  • End of the Cold War

The USSR had seen that communism in Germany and their attempts to keep people in East Germany were futile. They opened boarders in Berlin and all of Germany and Germany was free of communism. With immaculate speed, the countries on the Eastern side of the iron curtain had liberated themselves and the Cold War came to an End.
