    The Cold War

    The Cold War was a battle between Democracy and Communism. With both sides trying to spread their beliefs it lead to many crisis. This war led many countries to being divided at the time or to this day like Vietnam, Germany, and Korea. Other events during the war were The Cuban Missile Crisis, Berlin Wall, and the development of nuclear bombs.
  • Berlin Blockade and Airlift

    Berlin Blockade and Airlift
    On June 26, 1948 the Soviet Union set up a blockade to cut off resources to West Berlin. Soviet leaders set up the blockade to interfere with the West setting up a Democracy in Berlin. The West counterd with airlifts dropping supplies for Berlin and the Soviets called off the blockade on May 1949.
  • NATO

    NATO
    After the Berlin Airlift the United States of America and Canada along with some other democratic countries formed the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO). NATO was formed to counter Soviet power in Europe.
  • Korean War

    Korean War
    After World War II Korea was divided, the north was controlled by the Soviets and the south by the United States. The north quickly adopted a Communist government and the South a Democratic government. This seperation led to a war that ended in a standoff and a peace treaty was signed on July 27, 1953
  • Warsaw Pact

    Warsaw Pact
    The Soviet Union formed their own alliance with other Eastern European countries. Some of these countries were Bulgaria, Hungary, and Czechoslovakia etc. Some of these countries were forced in the Warsaw Pact like Eastern Germany, Romania and Poland etc.
  • Vietnam War

    Vietnam War
    The Vietnam War was basically like the Korean War the North vs. the South, Communism vs. Democracy. The North side of Vietnam were Communist and wanted to unite with the South but the South opposed the idea. The U.S. also didn't like the idea of a communist Vietnam but eventually the U.S. gave in and the North won
  • Space Race

    Space Race
    The space race was between the U.S. and the USSR to see who could get to space first and who could get the best equipment and who could go the farthest in space. It was a back in forth battle with both sides sending men, satellites and probes.
  • U-2 Reconnaissance Plane

    U-2 Reconnaissance Plane
    The US had sent many spy planes over USSR territory only on May 1st the Soviets shot down a plane. The plane was shot down because the pilot fell a sleep while flying, the plane eventually went low enough to be caught on radar. This inciddent only increased Soviet hostility.
  • Bay of Pigs

    Bay of Pigs
    With Cuba under Fidel Castros rule he quickly set up a communist government and allied himself with the USSR. The U.S. quickly put together 1,500 Cuban troops to start an uprising in Cuba. The troops were quickly defeated and Castro would later cause more problems for the U.S.
  • Cuban Missile Crisis

    Cuban Missile Crisis
    On Oct. 14, 1962 a U.S. spy plane took photos of ballistic nuclear missiles being set up in Cuba. Eventually the U.S. confronted the USSR about the missiles and they were taken down but while those missiles were in Cuba it caused a big ordeal for the safety of U.S. citizens.
  • Reunited Germany

    Reunited Germany
    On Nov. 9, 1989 East and West Germany reunited meaning the Warsaw Pact was on its last foot. This event arguably marked the ending of the Cold War.
