    On March 12, 1947, President Harry S. Truman presented this address before a joint session of Congress. His message, known as the Truman Doctrine, asked Congress for $400 million in military and economic assistance for Turkey and Greece in hopes to prevent communism spreading in Europe in these countries.

    On April 3, 1948, President Truman signed the Economic Recovery Act of 1948. It became known as the Marshall Plan where the United States provided economic assistance to restore the economic infrastructure of post WWII Europe.

    The Vietnam War

    From November 1, 1955 – April 30, 1975. This war was America’s commitment to the containment of communism during the Cold War. For approximately fifteen years, the Democratic Republic of Vietnam fought against an American-supported Republic of Vietnam. The war for the U.S. ended in 1973 with the withdrawal of American combat troops, and two years later, South Vietnamese forces surrendered to the North through the pull out policy of Vietnamization.
