    Yalta Conference
    A meeting at the end of WW11 with the US, Soviet Union, and the UK. They were discussing what to do with Germany/Europe postwar. They decided to demand Germany to surrender and to split Germany into 4 zones controlled by the three countries and also France.
  • Berlin Airlift

    Berlin Airlift
    The Russians wanted all of Germany so they closed off Western Germany from Western Berlin in hopes of cutting off supplies and driving out the US, Uk, and France. The US, UK, and France then airlifted supplies to their areas of Berlin for a year.
  • Army-McCarthy Hearings

    Army-McCarthy Hearings
    Televised Congressional hearings of Senator McCarthy from April to June of 1954. He tried investigating the Army security about community ties, but they accused him of using improper influence to win preferential treatment of someone. McCarthy was eventually acquitted, but the trial was widely watched by the country and it killed his political career.
  • The Space Race

    The Space Race
    During the Cold War, the Space Race was one of the ways the US and Russia were competing with each other. In the race to space, they competed to see who had better technology, engineering, and missile power. In 1957 Russia launched the first artificial satellite in orbit. The two countries kept making further improvements. On July 20, 1969, the US became the first country to put a person on the moon, during the Apollo 8 space mission.
  • Bay of Pigs Invasion

    Bay of Pigs Invasion
    Fidel Castro had taken control of Cuba and posed a threat to the US because of communism. JFK decided to launch an invasion of Cuba using Cuban exiles living in Miami. On April 13, bombers were sent over Cuba. On April 17, the exiles invaded the Bay of Pigs, but Castro had already found out about the invasion. 114 exiles were killed and 1,100 were taken as prisoners of war. This victory for Castro made seem like a hero to people in Cuba.
