    The 1600s

    The introduction of the modern library and the pencil marked the beginning of technology in the classroom. The slide rule was first introduced in 1654. It was used for math and was a precursor to what is now today know as electronic and graphing calculators. The Hornbook taught vowels, consonants, and the alphabet. The magic lantern was first introduced in 1646. These were photographic slides used for viewing .

    The Jacquard Loom was first introduced in France in 1725. This device marked the beginning of modern day computer programming. The loom weaves silk using punch cards that controlled the device. Punch cards were used as controls in the very first computers.

    Slates (small blackboards) and chalk were used in place of pen and paper.
    Blackboards were slats surrounded by a wooden border. Slate was an abundant material during the 19th century. The whiteboard is our modern day replacement for the slate. The calculating engine was introduced in 1822 by Charles Babbage. This invention led to modern day digital computing. The typewriter was invented in 1873, along with the QWERTY keyboard that is still used today.

    The film projector was used in classrooms by 1925. It showed still images from a film strip with audio provided. The images were manually changed. This technology remained untils the early 1980s. The radio was also during 1925. It was used to broadcast lessons to other schools. The first lesson was sent over by the Board of Education in New York in 1925.
