    This was the court case that ruled separate educational facilities unequal and encouraged integration of schools
  • Emmitt Till murder

    A young 16-year-old boy is killed. Despite eyewitness testimony, white murderers were not found guilty.
    Mother gives an open casket ceremony which draws media attention.

    Montgomery Bus Boycotts

    African Americans throughout Alabama boycotted buses for 385 days in protest against segregation and jim crow laws.
  • Little Rock 9

    A group of 9 african american students are sent to Little Rock central high to study as a way of intergrating schools. They are blocked access to the school by the national guard with command from the senator.
    Eisenhower helps to enforce Brown by sending the 101st Airborne to protect the students.
  • Freedom Bus Rides

    Civil rights activists rode buses into the Deep South to challenge the state laws that enforced segregation on interstate buses and terminals.
  • Lunch counter sitins.

    African Americans would sit in cafeterias or restaurants that did not serve people of color. Even though they were refused to order they faced attacks from people who did not want their presence. Businesses were furious as people would stop coming in because they did not like black Americans.

    Largest civil rights gathering
    over 200000 people participated
    This is also where Martin Luther King gave his speech "I Have a dream"
  • Birmingham Protests

    Another effort to fight for civil rights. King was arrested and this led to the letter from a Birmingham Jail. Children were involved in these protests.
  • Civil Rights Act of 1964

    Makes Jim Crow laws illegal
    Outlawed segregation in spaces open to the public
    Justice department could enforce it
    Prohibited discrimination in employment by race.
  • Freedom Summer

    This was a voter registration drive aimed at increasing the number of registered black voters in mississipi.
  • Voting Rights Act

    Prohibited Literacy tests and poll tax.
    Authorized the use of federal registrars to register votes of states fail to respect the 15th amendment.
    Federal government to take over polling.
  • Selma Marches

    March from Selma to Montgomery in a fight for constitutional rights to vote. It led to Bloody Sunday where participants were beaten.
