  • Medicine During the War

    The main medicine used throughout the war was Anesthesia, mainly for surgeries. Techniques developed in response to sick and wounded soldiers led to advances in pain management. Medicine during the Civil War sparked a new era of modern medicine.

    New technology and Weapons included:

    - repeating rifles
    - ironnclads
    - submarines
  • Fort Sumter

    Where Confederates fire on Fort Sumter in Charleston Harbor, South Carolina. Confederates successfully captured Fort Sumter.

  • Virginia Secession

    Virginia Seceded after Lincoln requested 75,000 volunteers to fight against the South. This was a big deal because Virginia was heavily populated and was most industrialized.
  • Battle at Bull Run

    The Union was on their way to their Capital and ran into a group of Confederates. Bull Run was only 25 miles away from the Union Capital. At first the Union had the upper hand but Stonewall Jackson held the Confederates together until reinforcements came. This was the first win for the South.

  • Battle at Shiloh

    The Confederates bombarded the Union soldiers in the morning. Some of the Union were sleeping and some were drinking coffee. General Grant reorganized the Union and requested reinforcements. The next day the Union counterattacked the Confederates, causing them to retreat.

  • Battle at Richmond

    An effort by the Confederates to capture the Commonwealth of Kentucky, its men and materials. Ending in the victory for the Confederates.

  • Battle at Antietam

    A Union soldier scouting out the Confederates camp, found a copy of Lee's plan. They found out that his troops were separated and decided to go after Lee. Eventually the Confederates slowed down and became sluggish, they retreated.

  • Emancipation Proclamation

    The EP was made to mainly convince states to join the Union.The Emancipation stated "that all persons held as slaves" within the rebellious states "are, and henceforward shall be free".
  • Battle at Gettysburg

    The Union stopped the Confederates from invading Maryland. it was a turning point in the war because it made the Confederates have to retreat.

  • Gettysburg Address

    Abraham Lincoln talked about how the sacrifices made during the War was for "a new birth of freedom". He also reinstated the principles of human rights from the Declaration of Independence.
  • Surrender at Appomattox

    Near the town Appomattox in Virginia, General Lee surrendered his army to General Grant. This started the end of the 4 year war.

  • Assassination of Abraham Lincoln

    In attempts to revive the Confederacy John Wilkes Booth killed President Abraham Lincoln at Petersen House, Washington D.C.
