Missouri Compromise
In the Missouri Compromise they made the line 36 30 or the Louisiana purchase territory line. The purpose of the line was to separate free states and slave states. Everything above the 36 30 line is a free state and everything below it is a slave state.With the exception Maine became a free state and Missouri became a slave state. -
Nat Turner's Rebellion
Nat Turner was a slave that led a slave rebellion. The rebellion killed slave owners and their families because of how much they were mistreated. The rebellion killed over 50 people. Once they were caught the people that were part of the rebellion were executed. -
Compromise of 1850
In the Compromise of 1850 California was admitted as a free state. They established Utah and New Mexico as territories from Mexican Cession to decide popular sovereignty or voting to maybe permit slavery. It was created as a current western border to Texas and got 10 million to cover their debt. The law for the Compromise was you would have to recapture runaway slaves and if you helped a runaway slave you would go to jail. -
Uncle Tom's Cabin
Uncle Tom's Cabin was written by Harriet Beecher Stowe. Her book was about the horrors of slavery and how they were treated by slave owners. This made Northerners see how bad slavery was which turned many of them into abolitionists. -
Trouble in Kansas
In the Kansas-Nebraska Act Stephen Douglas decided that he would divide the land into 2 territories, Kansas and Nebraska. Then he would let people decide what would happen with those states whether they were slave or free states with popular sovereignty. On the day of the election 5,000 Missourians crossed the border and illegally voted. In the end of the votes the Pro-Slavery representatives won the Kansas legislature. The Pro-Slavery mob attacked Lawrence, KS which led to other attacks. -
Dread Scott Ruling
Dred Scott was a slave in Missouri. When he was with his slave owner he moved around a lot. When his owner died Dred Scott fought for his rights to be free. He did everything in his power to be free. He also claimed that he was once a free man when he lived in places where slavery was illegal. Then finally he sued his way into freedom and got his freedom. But he was only able to experience it for a year because after he got his freedom he died. -
John Brown's Raid
John Brown's Raid happened in Harpers Ferry, Virginia on October 16th, 1859. John Brown started this raid because he wanted to arm slaves and start a rebellion. He started the raid in Harpers Ferry, Virginia to get guns to give to slaves. After he was caught he was tried for treason and hung. The North mourned his death and saw him as a hero and the South celebrated it because they saw him as a threat. -
1860 Election
At the 1860 election Abraham Lincoln was elected as president. Whenever Lincoln was elected many states seceded and the first state to secede was South Carolina. His first act as president was to make secession illegal. After all of this the states formed the Confederate State of America and named Jefferson Davis as their president. They wrote a constitution that supported the states rights and protected slavery. Lincoln then stated that he didn't intend to abolish slavery.
