Dred Scott v. Sandford
Dred Scott was moved to a free state and he tried to sue his owner for his freedom. Ruled against Scott and stated that slaves are not citizens and do not have the right to take people to court. -
13th Amendment
Adopted in 1865, the 13th Amendment freed the slaves and is against the cruel and unusual punishment without due process of law. -
14th Amendment
There is equal protection to freed slaves, State and local officials have limited action and due process is introduced to protect citizens from the state and local government -
15th Amendment
African American men have the right to vote and the right to vote cant be denied based on race and previous servitude. -
White Primaries
These were primary elections in the south organized by southern democratic parties for whites after 1880. -
Plessy v Ferguson
Plessy v Ferguson made it that public facilities needed to be segregated and used the phrase "separate but equal" for justification. -
19th Amendment
Women get the right to vote and no citizen should get denied the vote based on sex. -
Equal Rights Amendment
The Equal Rights Amendment provides protection to anyone regardless of sex and is used in divorces, property and employment. -
Brown v Board of Education
Brown v Board of Education declared that segregation in school is unconstitutional. -
Affirmative Action
An action or policy favoring people who face discrimination like minorities. Applies especially to employment or education. -
24th Amendment
The state and federal government are not allowed to place poll taxes during elections -
Poll Taxes
Poll Taxes tax people when they vote and it was ratified on January 23rd 1964 -
Civil Rights of 1964
This is a Civil Rights law that bans the discrimination based on sex, race, nation origin and religion. -
Voting Rights Act of 1965
This law was signed during the Civil Rights movement and outlaws racial discrimination in voting. -
Reed v Reed
There was an Idaho law that preferred men over women and it violated the 14th Amendment. The choice to pick someone can not be solely based on sex. -
Regents of University of California v Bakke
Bakke was denied admission to University of California twice when his qualifications exceeded all other candidates. Voted in favor of Bakke and said that a University can use race as a reason to admit or not admit something. -
Bowers v. Hardwick
Micheal Hardwick was engaged in sexual sodomy with another man and was witnessed by a Georgie police officer. He was taken into custody and the case made it all the way to the supreme court. Ruled against Hardwick because there is not constitutional protection for acts of sodomy. -
Americans with Disabilities Act
Americans with Disabilities protects people with disabilities and imposed that buildings must have ramps and easy access to people with disabilities. -
Lawrence v. Texas
John Lawrence and another man were engaged in Sexual actions with each other. State arrested them in saying that two people of the same sex can not engage in sexual conduct. The Supreme court overturned that ruling and cited that the mean had the right to because of the due process clause.
