Civil Right Events

  • CORE creates sit-ins

    During a sit in, customers enter a business and sit at the counter refusing to leave until they are waited on. Most participants were sent to jail. During a sit in, some participants were mocked, beaten and had food thrown on them.
  • SNCC begins meeting

    A new civil rights group run by young activists began meeting in 1960. It soon became an independent civil rights organization. Members argued for immediate change rather than gradual change like most organizations.
  • March on Birmingham

    In April 1963 MLK joined a protest walk in Birmingham. When officials ordered protesters to stop, they did not. Many protesters including MLK were arrested. He did not get out of jail for over a week, during which time he wrote his famous Birmingham letter (which I just did an english assignment on hehe)
  • March on Washington

    While Kennedy's bill stalled in congress, a protest was proposed at Washington. over 200,000 attended and the march was largely peaceful. However, the bill remained stalled in congress.
  • Civil Rights Act

    After Kennedy was assassinated, his replacement president Johnson fought for the bill to pass. Eventually the house passed the bill but opponents in the Senate had a filibuster to prevent a vote. Eventually though, the bill was voted on and passed, and this became known as The Civil Rights Act of 1964.
  • Multiple Assassinations

    In April of 1968, MLK was fatally shot while supporting the Poor People Campaign. The death provoked riots in over 120 cities. Robert F Kennedy was fatally shot while campaigning for the presidential nomination by an assassin.
