    Wendell Foster Center of Owensboro
    The Wendell Foster Center was created to help with children and adults that have special needs. Their mission is to empower people with disabilities and give them opportunities to succeed. They provide transportation, classes, and even housing for people in our community. The people who work and volunteer at the center take great care of everyone who visits the center!     Matt Damon Created Water.org
    Matt Damon is a famous actor that has been in movies like Deadpool, We Bought a Zoo, and many more. He learned about the horrific water situation in Africa and decided to do something about it, so he created water.org. They are working to bring clean water and sanitation to the people of Africa. Matt Damon could have spent his money, time, and effort on buying big houses and fancy cars, but instead he chose to help make a change. Link to water.org:Link text

    Emma Watson and UNICEF
    Emma Watson is most well-known for her role as Hermione Granger in the Harry Potter film series. In her spare time, Emma works with charities by advocating, raising money, and volunteering her time to help. She has worked with a lot of different charities including UNICEF, which helps provide healthcare and food to women and children in need.

    Kid President
    Robby Novak started making Kid President videos on YouTube. His videos are made to try and inspire kids and adults to make good life choices and to help out people and their community. His videos have been viewed millions of times and have inspired both kids and adults.   • Puzzle Pieces Nonprofit in Owensboro

    Puzzle Pieces Nonprofit in Owensboro
    Puzzle Pieces is a nonprofit organization that opened in Owensboro to serve individuals who are 8 years or older and have an intellectual disability. Puzzle Pieces was opened by Amanda Owen because she saw the need of a place like this in Owensboro. The Wendell Foster Center was the only place for these individuals to go and it was getting overcrowded, but now Puzzle Pieces gives them another option. They provide classes and training for these individuals and help teach them life skills.
  • ALS Ice Bucket Challenge

    ALS Ice Bucket Challenge
    The ALS Ice Bucket Challenge was started on social media by young people who wanted to help raise money for the ALS Association. ALS is an abbreviation for amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, which is a disease that effects nerve cells in the brain and spine. The Ice Bucket Challenge raised over $115 million for the ALS Associaiton. Link text
  • Facebook Fundraisers

    Facebook Fundraisers
    Facebook is a popular social media site that is used to communicate and share with other people around the world. Facebook decided it wanted a way to give back to nonprofit organizations and its' users, so it started Facebook Fundraisers. Anyone can start a fundraiser on Facebook and then share it with their friends. Facebook reports that over 300 million dollars have been raised since the campaign started. Link text
  • Sorgho Students Take Cards to Nursing Homes

    Sorgho Students Take Cards to Nursing Homes
    Students at Sorgho have shown civic engagement through their service projects. For one of these projects, Sorgho kindergartners made cards for local nursing home residents for Thanksgiving, Christmas, and Valentine's Day. These cards were then delivered by the 4th and 5th grade students. These cards put a smile on the nursing home resident's faces.
  • Sorgho Blood Drive

    Sorgho Blood Drive
    Sorgho second grade students helped run a blood drive for the Western Kentucky Regional Blood Center. The students made posters to advertise, knocked on doors in the surrounding neighborhoods, and encouraged their parents and family members to donate blood.   • Sorgho Students Clean up for Earth Day

    Sorgho Students Clean up for Earth Day
    Sorgho's 4th grade students did a project on Earth Day. They decided that all of the students in the building should be educated on Earth Day by watching educational videos, and then the fourth graders gave every classroom an area around the school to either clean up trash or water flowers and plants.
