Muhammad's visit

At age 40 while in a cave near Mecca, Muhammad is believed to have a visit from the angel, Gabriel, who recites the first revelations of the Quran and tells him that he is to be a prophet of God. Muhammad then tells his people to worship his one true God, but he and his followers are persecuted.

Migration to Yathrib (Medina)

Jul 28, 622

After being persecuted in Mecca, Muhammad and his followers move to modern day Medina where he establishes an Islamic state based on the commands shown in the Quran and the guidance coming to him from God. Eventually he begins to invite other nations to Islam.

Return to Mecca

Jul 28, 630

Muhammad returns peacefully to Mecca and eventually all of the city accepts Islam. All idols are cleared away and worship is redirected to God.

Muhammad Dies

Jul 28, 633

After a prolonged sickness, Muhammad dies and the Muslim community elects his father-in-law as his successor.

Muslims enter Spain

Jul 28, 711

Muslims enter Spain and almost the entire Iberian Peninsula is eventually under Islamic control.

Defeat in France

Muslims are defeated at Potiers in France by Charles Martel

Islam in Africa

Jul 28, 1000

Islam begins to spread through Africa, including Nigeria, which served as a trading liaison between the northern and central areas of Africa.

European Crusaders

Jul 28, 1099

European Crusaders take Jerusalem from the Muslims. Muslims eventually defeat the Europeans and regain control of their holy land.

Islam spreads to Asia

Jul 28, 1120

Malaysian merchants interact with Muslims who teach them about Islam.

Ottoman State Formed

Jul 27, 1299

The earliest Ottoman state is formed in Anatolia, Turkey.
