US/World- Beginning of The Civil War
The election of the anti-slavery Republican Abraham Lincoln as president in 1860 caused seven southern states to secede from the Union to form the Confederate States of America; four more joined them after the first shots of the Civil War were fired. By the time it ended in Confederate surrender in 1865, the Civil War proved to be the costliest war ever fought on American soil, with some 620,000 soldiers killed, millions more injured and the population and the land of the South devastated.
  • US/World- The Gettysburg Address

    US/World- The Gettysburg Address
Though he was not the featured orator that day, Lincoln’s 273-word address would be remembered as one of the most important speeches in American history. In it, he invoked the principles of human equality contained in the Declaration of Independence and connected the sacrifices of the Civil War with the desire for “a new birth of freedom,” as well as the all-important preservation of the Union created in 1776 and its ideal of self-government.
  • Chemistry-Law of Octaves

    Chemistry-Law of Octaves
Law of octaves, in chemistry, is the generalization made by the English chemist J.A.R. Newlands in 1865 that, if the chemical elements are arranged according to increasing atomic weight, those with similar physical and chemical properties occur after each interval of seven elements. Newlands was one of the first to detect a periodic pattern in the properties of the elements and anticipated later developments of the periodic law.

    US/World- President Lincoln's Assassination
On the evening of April 14, 1865, John Wilkes Booth, a famous actor and Confederate sympathizer, assassinated President Abraham Lincoln at Ford’s Theatre in Washington, D.C. The attack came only five days after Confederate General Robert E. Lee surrendered his massive army at Appomattox Court House, Virginia, effectively ending the American Civil War.
  • US/World- Andrew Johnson's Impeachment

    US/World- Andrew Johnson's Impeachment
At the outbreak of the Civil War in 1861, Andrew Johnson was the only U.S senator from a seceding state who remained loyal to the Union.President Johnson enacted a lenient Reconstruction policy for the defeated South, a program of rapid restoration of U.S. state status for the seceded states. On February 24, Johnson was impeached, and on March 13 his impeachment trial began. The trial ended on May 26 with Johnson’s opponents narrowly failing to get the two-thirds majority necessary to convict him.
  • Chemistry-Mendeleev's Periodic Table

    Chemistry-Mendeleev's Periodic Table
Mendeleev found that, when all the known chemical elements were arranged in order of increasing atomic weight, the resulting table displayed a recurring pattern, or periodicity, of properties within groups of elements. In his version of the periodic table of 1871, he left gaps in places where he believed unknown elements would find their place. The subsequent proof of many of his predictions within his lifetime brought fame to Mendeleev as the founder of the periodic law.
  • Chemistry-Discovery of The Electron

    Chemistry-Discovery of The Electron
The particle that J.J.Thomson discovered in 1897, the electron, is a constituent of all the matter we are surrounded by. All atoms are made of a nucleus and electrons. He received the Nobel Prize in 1906 for the discovery of the electron, the first elementary particle. However, several people had been studying the intriguing effects in electric discharge tubes before him.
  • US/World- Beginning of the Spanish American War

US/World- Beginning of the Spanish American War
The Spanish-American War was a conflict between the United States and Spain that ended Spanish colonial rule in the Americas and resulted in U.S. acquisition of territories in the western Pacific and Latin America.Spain’s brutally repressive measures to halt the rebellion were graphically portrayed for the U.S. by several sensational newspapers, and American sympathy for the rebels rose. The growing popular demand for U.S. intervention became prevalent after the sinking of the USS Maine.
  • Chemistry-The Plum Pudding Model

    Chemistry-The Plum Pudding Model
The Plum Pudding Model is a model of atomic structure proposed by J.J. Thomson in the late 19th century. Thomson had discovered that atoms are composite objects, made of pieces with positive and negative charge, and that negatively charged electrons within the atom were tiny compared to the entire atom. He therefore proposed that atoms have structure similar to a plum pudding, with tiny, negatively charged electrons embedded in a positively charged substrate. This was later proven to be wrong.
  • US/World- Great San Francisco Earthquake

    US/World- Great San Francisco Earthquake
In the early morning of April 18, 1906, the city of San Francisco was struck by a large earthquake. The earthquake killed at least 3,000 people as well. The earthquake also devastated and destroyed 80% of the city.
  • Chemistry-Discovery of Proton

    Chemistry-Discovery of Proton
During the Rutherford Gold Foil Experiment the Proton was discovered. It was in this experiment that he created his atomic theory, but during this experiment he also discovered that atoms must contain a concentrated positive center charge. This positive charge was the proton.
  • Chemistry-Rutherford's Gold Foil Experiment

    Chemistry-Rutherford's Gold Foil Experiment
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XBqHkraf8iE Physicist Ernest Rutherford established the nuclear theory of the atom with his gold-foil experiment. When he shot a beam of alpha particles at a sheet of gold foil, a few of the particles were deflected. He concluded that a tiny, dense nucleus was causing the deflections.
  • US/World- Titanic Disaster

    US/World- Titanic Disaster
On April 15, 1912, the RMS Titanic hit an iceberg and sunk because of it. The ship sunk off the coast of Newfoundland in the North Atlantic ocean. The ship was on its maiden voyage from South Hampton in England to New York in the United States
  • Chemistry- Moseley/ Atomic Numbers

    Chemistry- Moseley/ Atomic Numbers
In 1913 Henry Moseley performed an experiment that was important in making use of atomic numbers. Before Moseley's experiment atomic numbers were just an element's place in the periodic table, and they were not associated with any measurable physical quantity. But after the experiment atomic numbers were used for counting the amount of positive charges in a single atom.
  • Chemistry- Bohr's Planetary Model of the Atom

Chemistry- Bohr's Planetary Model of the Atom
The Planetary Model of the atom introduced by Niels Bohr and Ernest Rutherford in 1913, describes the atom as a small, positively charged nucleus with electrons traveling in circular orbit around the nucleus. Before this model it was predicted that the electrons on the outside emitted electromagnetic radiation while getting closer to the nucleus, and this prediction assumed that all atoms were unstable. To fix this problem the planetary model was created.

    US/World- Great Depression

The Great Depression was the worst economic depression in history. It happened when the US stock market crashed causing the world economy to collapse. Which also caused millions of people to lose their jobs as well. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GCQfMWAikyU
  • Chemistry- Discovery of Neutron

    Chemistry- Discovery of Neutron
The Neutron was discovered in 1932 by James Chadwick. He found the Neutron by using scattering data to find the mass of the Neutron. Before this find it was known that there was something with the protons in the nucleus to cancel out the electrons on the outside. But there could not be electrons in the nucleus because that would have made many contradictions with other ideas. So that is where the idea of the neutron came.
