    The Beagle Voyage

At only 22 years old, Charles Darwin would begin a five year adventure circumnavigating the world and visiting five continents.Darwin would spent the time he had available exploring the land making numerous discoveries and observations. One frequent activity of Darwin was extracting fossils of extinct creatures. The observations he made from these bones set the foundation for his theory of evolution.

    Formal Research

Darwin began conducting his formal research into his theory of "transmutation" (known as evolution today). With the aid of a £1,000 grant from the Cambridge Network, Darwin enlisted multiple experts and published their combined works in his "Zoology of the Voyage of H.M.S. Beagle" in 1843.
  • On the Origin of Species

Darwin's "The Origins of Species" is first sold. This is his most famous work that details the theory of evolution and natural selection. Darwin would receive both great praise and backlash. Darwin's book would both revolutionize scientific thought as well as challenge the centuries old idea of creationism. Darwin preferred to avoid the public eye. Fortunately for Darwin, his friend Thomas Huxley, was more than willing to publicly debate on his behalf.

    Further Research

Despite now being in his 50's and being frequently plagued with illness, Darwin continued to search for more evidence to support his theory of natural selection. He continued to work with Thomas Huxley. In 1872, Darwin would publish The Expression of the Emotions in Man and Animals. This purpose of this illustration was to demonstrate the link between man and animal through facial expressions.
