  • 17th Century Education

    Education was not required. Children were needed to help on the farm. Main purpose of education was to teach children to read the bible and have puritan morals.
  • First Public School

  • Harvard College

    Harvard College was established. The first higher education institution.
  • Education Shift

    Education shifted from religion based for the privileged, to state sponsored education.
  • Public School

    First Public school established for more than privileged families.
  • Board of Education

    Massachusetts creates the first state Board of Education

  • Department of Education

    Department of Education was established
  • Public Schools

    Public schools were present in every state
  • Economic Depression

    Economic depression hurt the education system and closed due to lack of funds for staff and supplies
  • Elementary School

    Every state required students to complete elementary school
  • School Transportation

    Progressive Education Association was established and all 50 states had an agreement to fund the transportation of students to school
  • Universities

    The Association of American Universities was established
  • Segregation

    Segregated Schooling in the United States was eliminated
  • Technology

    Technology starts making its way into classrooms.
  • Special Education

    The United States passed the law for Special Education called the "Education for All Handicapped Children Act."
  • Computers

    Computer aided instruction was common in both K-12 and higher education
  • NAEP

    NAEP was passed to assess student performance at the state level
  • More technology

    Multiple computers are in classrooms nationwide
  • No Child Left Behind

    The United States entered its current era with the institution of the No Child Left Behind Law.
  • Standards

    Almost all states had developed and put in place academic standards for what students should know
