    The Missouri compromise happened in 1820 and Missouri wanted to be a save sate but they needed another state to balance the free and slave states out. For the state that they would make a free state they choose Maine.

    In the mexican American war America got a bunch of new territory and Wilmot proposed a compermise that would ban slavery in the new territory. The compermise angered the south because they needed slavery for their markets and wanted it to be legal in all of America and it pleased the north because they didnt like slavery and wanted it banned in all of America.

    Congress passed a law that made northerners return escaped slaves to their masters.They would even take free African Americans that have been living free for their whole life and put them into slavery.There was a big debate in america because of slavery between the north and south and congress wanted to please them both and they wanted the union to stay together and thought that it would help.The Fugitive salve act made the north really mad and they started to help slaves escape to Canada.

    Harriet Beecher Stowe wrote a book called Uncle Toms Cabin. She wrote a book on a slave living in the time with the fugitive act.She lived in the north and over time the book became a worldwide sensation . She wrote the book to bring awareness to the life of slaves and hard it is for them during this time. The book helped make people more aware to the problem of slavery.

    Kansas was deciding if they wanted to be a free state or a slave state with popular sovereignty and the free votes won but the government decided that it would be a slave state and people got mad and murder the people that wanted the state to be a slave state.

    Dred Scott was an escaped slave that lived in free state for most of his life and wanted to sue his former master but the congress said that he couldn't because he was considered a piece of property and the judge that was on the case determined that congress could not ban slavery in any state. The south was happy because slavery was now legal in all territories and the north was not happy and feared slavery spreading through out the west.

    They would do debates on the topic of slavery and Douglas won the debates. Lincoln wanted slavery to banned and he thought that it was wrong and didn't want it to spread into western territories. Douglas believed that the states should decide if they wanted slavery to be legal or not.

    In the heat of the nation decreeing the issue over slavery they needed a new president. there were 4 candidates and Lincoln was one of them. Lincoln ended up wining the election with the electoral college vote even though he got only 40% of the public vote. Lincoln became the 16th president of the america.

    After Lincoln was announced president the south was not happy and they wanted to secede from the union and make their own nation. The south wanted to be their own nation because they didn't like Lincoln and they were afraid that he would end slavery everywhere. One month after Lincoln was elected south Carolina was the first to succeed from the nation followed by other states.
