  • Missouri Compromise

    Missouri Compromise
    On March 3rd, 1820 the Missouri Compromise began. This event involved the North and the South. As well as Henry Clay. The North and the South were deciding if they wanted slaves to be free. This event had happened in Missouri and some of this got placed in congress so they can resolve the fact of slavery. Also, the territories got to decide if the slaves were free or not. Main was free & Missouri wasn't. This was a big impact in history because it had made the Mexican American war at the time.
  • Wilmot Proviso

    Wilmot Proviso
    On August 8th, 1846 was the Wilmot Proviso. This event was including David Wilmot and took place in Pennsylvania. They wanted to ban slavery so they took it to Congress to ban slavery but it didn't work out for them. So then slavery wasn't banned at all. They had a whole discussion in Congress to ban slavery and David had written the Proviso for this event. It impacted history so much because it was a major event that led up to the civil war and it was a result of the Mexican-American War.

    Compromise of 1850
    5 laws for slavery:
    - Congress would admit California as a free state
    - The people of the territories of New Mexico and Utah would decide the slavery question by popular sovereignty
    - The slave trade-but not slavery-would be ended in Washington D.C
    - Congress would pass a strict new fugitive slave law
    - Texas would give up its claims to New Mexico in return for $10 million
    It took place in California and they brought laws to solve slavery. This impacted history because Cali. was a free state.

    Fugitive Slave Act
    September 1850 was the Fugitive Slave Act. This event was passed by Congress. The north didn't like it and they began to resist it. It was convincing the north that slavery was evil. in this event, slaves wanted to be free. As a result of this, it got passed by the southerners in the United States. The government was being able to make some of the slaves free. But no African American was safe anymore. It impacted history because it was being able to be passed by Congress and by the southerners.
  • Uncle Tom's Cabin

    Uncle Tom's Cabin
    In 1852, a book was published by Harriet Beecher Stowe in Ontario. The book was called Uncle Tom's Cabin. In this a story is told about an enslaved man who is abused by his cruel owner. It exposed the horrors of what life is like living as a slave. This happened because Harriet Beecher Stowe wanted to tell the world about how slaves were treated.This book was one of the main causes of the Civil war. Lincoln said to her "So you're the lady who started this whole war."
  • Kansas Nebraska Act/Bleeding Kansas

    Kansas Nebraska Act/Bleeding Kansas
    In 1854, people traveled to Kansas and anti-slavery and pro-slavery was debated, resulting in pro-slavery winning. Stephen Douglas, the senator, helped pass the Kansas-Nebraska act. The Kansas-Nebraska act divided the North and the South. The act was supported by the South and it was hoped that there would be territories becoming slave states. The North was not happy and felt that they have been betrayed by Douglas. Kansas then had an pro-slavery and anti-slavery government. Violence broke out.
  • Dred Scott Case

    Dred Scott Case
    A slave named Dred Scott moved with his slave owners to the free state of Missouri in 1857. Dred Scott sued for his freedom when he came into the state. He argued that he should be a free man. Freedom of slavery was then debated. It was argued whether or not a slave should be considered free and not property in a free state. It was decided that Scott would remain property, and that he could not sue because he was a slave and not considered a U.S. citizen. Slavery was legal in all territories.
  • Lincoln Douglas Debate

    Lincoln Douglas Debate
    This was a debate of Lincoln and Douglas and happened in Illinois. They were debating about slavery but Douglas said that slaves should never be free or even be citizens in the United States. Lincoln was not into the thing for voting for the blacks. And he wants equality. Blacks and whites should be equal. He believed that slavery is wrong and it shouldn't be spread around at the states. This impacted history because Douglas won the election and now slavery could not be free or be a citizen.
  • John Brown's Raid

    John Brown's Raid
    John Brown was an abolitionist and was very religious. In 1859 Brown raised a group of followers to help him free slaves in the South. Brown fought against slavery and wanted it to end. He claimed that the bible urged him to care for the enslaved and poor. This took place in court. He was found guilty of murder and treason. John Brown was hung. The north mourned Brown's death and the South thought that it was proof the North was trying to end their way of life.
  • Lincoln's Election of 1860

    In 1860, Abraham Lincoln was elected for president along with Douglas, Beckinridge, and Bell. The four people ran for president in Virginia. They all had different thoughts on slavery. Douglas, Beckinridge, and Bell were all for slavery. Lincoln was against it. Southerners wanted Douglas to win. Lincoln won in every free state. Beckinridge won in most slave states. Bell won in three upper south states. Douglas won in Missouri. The republican party and Abraham Lincoln won the election.
  • Southern Secession

    Southern Secession
    After Lincoln got elected, South Carolina seceded first from the U.S. as well as the other 6 states over the issue of slavery and because Lincoln was against it. Also, South Carolina wanted to attack or they tried to attack Fort Sumter. If South Carolina secedes then they would want to take all of the troops. Seceded states: Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, South Carolina, and Texas. Also, since something happened to Fort Sumter the other 6 states joined with South Carolina.
