    Xbox Live Launch Q1
    What was the event?
Xbox Live was the first home console to offer games that could be played online. Microsoft choose to restrict online access to broadband and included an broadband adaptor inside each of there consoles. Xbox Live’s main purpose was to push the envelope of multiplayer as far as possible.
  • Xbox Live Launch Q2

    Xbox Live Launch Q2
What impact did this event have on the industry as a whole?
Only 4.4 percent of households in the United States subscribed to broadband services in the year 2000. Xbox Live soon came into play and by the year 2010, that percent went up 68.2 percent. I believe that Xbox Live showed that multi-player could be expanded to a whole other level on the home consoles. At first video games only offered enemies like A.I.s and sometimes they were too predictable. Why not put the players against themselves.

What impact would this event have had on you as a designer working in the games industry?
As a designer this would change how you would think about creating a game. You would want to take full advantage of incorporating the multiplayer aspect that Xbox Live had to offer. You would also want to find ways to make the world in a video game feel more like a “real world” experience, full of other players instead of A.I.s.

  • EA buys NFL rights Q1

    EA buys NFL rights Q1
    What was the event?
In 2004 Electronic Arts signed a deal with the NFL and were given sole rights that included everything from teams, players, and stadiums. This deal was great for EA in many ways because not only did the have the NFL’s rights, it meant all of EA’s competitors didn’t. This gave complete control of the market.

    EA buy NFL rights Q2
What impact did this event have on the industry as a whole?
After EA obtained NFL’s rights designers were able to go in much further detail with the game. The fields would look more like the real fields. The players would have their name on their jersey. The team’s logo would look like the team’s logo. All of the small details add up and produce that best, most realistic experience.

    EA buys NFL rights Q3
What impact would this event have had on you as a designer working in the games industry?
Having some ones rights, such EA having the NFL’s rights, can be a good or bad thing. It could be great in a since that as a designer you know that you would have virtually no boundaries when developing the game. You can try to create the most truly realistic experience possible. It could be a bad thing as well. Knowing that you own the rights to NFL, there really isn’t any competition to push your team.
  • EA lawsuit Q1

    EA lawsuit Q1
What was the event? With the NCAA suing Electronic Arts it ultimately means no more college football games, at least for now. Former college athletes say that EA’s games used players’ likenesses without receiving any compensation. EA tried putting lawsuit to rest when they reached a $40 million settlement. Instead the NCAA is now suing EA and the College Licensing Company. The case is still awaiting trail that is scheduled for March 2015.

    EA lawsuit Q3
What impact would this event have had on you as a designer working in the games industry?
As a designer I would support EA’s stance in trying to obtain rights to use player names and likenesses. It can prove to be very difficult to make a video game based on college football when you're not even allowed to use all the aspects that come with college football. Game designers shouldn’t feel so restricted when making a game that is going to simulate an college footbal exsperince.
  • EA lawsuit Q2

    EA lawsuit Q2
What impact did this event have on the industry as a whole? The effect of this event is that EA wont be creating any college football games in the near future until the law suit is worked out. This defiantly hurts the the industry in the short term but it might actually benefit the industry later on when it is all said and done. EA has made efforts to have schools and NCAA allow the use of athlete’s names but so far have failed. EA’s goal is to make the college football games as real as can be.
  • Activison Bungie deal Q1

    Activison Bungie deal Q1
    What was the event?
The agreement was originally signed on April 16, 2010. In the agreement Bungie is to make a game called “Destiny” with the publisher Activision. Bungie first worked with Microsoft in 2000 but then went independent in 2007 and remained so until this agreement.
  • Activison Bungie deal Q2

    Activison Bungie deal Q2
What impact did this event have on the industry as a whole? This agreement caused high anticipation among the whole industry. Bungie, who created one of the most recent/best games of all times, would be now working with Activison, who has published numerous of great games. I believe its really exciting for industry because everyone is just waiting to see what else Bungie can do and what the new standard will be.
  • Activison Bungie deal Q3

    Activison Bungie deal Q3
What impact would this event have had on you as a designer working in the games industry?
As a designer at Bungie, I believe this agreement is very exciting because up to this point Bungie has hardly ventured outside of the Halo universe. I would be very excited to start working on a whole new game and take everything I learned from the development of all the Halo games and implement them in the new game.
  • Closing of LucasArts Q1

    Closing of LucasArts Q1
    What was the event?
LucasArts has been the long maker of almost all of the Star Wars games to this date. The new owner of LucasArts, Disney, announced on April 3, 2013 that they would be closing the studio. This happen during the production of Star Wars games such as Star Wars 1313 and First Assault. This has left a lot of people wondering if there will ever be Star Wars games again.
  • Closing of LucasArts Q3

    Closing of LucasArts Q3
What impact would this event have had on you as a designer working in the games industry?
Disney has said that they plan to shift from internal development to a licensing model. I believe as a designer working for a company, outside of LucasArts, that was given a chance to work on a Star Wars title would be very exciting. It is sometimes nice having a new team to work on a game in universe such as Star Wars because a new team could bring in ideas and concepts that weren't thought of internally.
  • Closing of LucasArts Q2

    Closing of LucasArts Q2
What impact did this event have on the industry as a whole? This event has left an impact on the industry because it has a lot of people wondering who’s going to make the next Star Wars games. LucasArts have tried licensing outside of the studio in the past with BioWare, who was very successful in creating the RPG game Knights of the Old Republic. Not only was BioWare successful but Traveller’s Tales were as well when they were responsible for all the Lego Star Wars series.
