  • Francis Pegahmagabow and Native American Soldiers

    Francis (or Peggy) fought in the 2nd Battle of Ypres and the Battle of Somme. In these rough battles Peggy experienced the trench warfare and the Germans poison gas. He was a part of the Parry Island Band from Ontario, and he was one of the 4 000 Aboriginal soldiers. Francis was an excellent sniper, scout, and he was awarded three medals, proving his worth. Peggy honoured Canada and the Native Americans. This was a big progress for everyone. Social.

    2nd Battle of Ypres

    Thousands of soldiers were lost in the battle, 6 035 with casualties and 2 000 lost. This was the battle that the Germans introduced their new weapon, poison gas. This was a huge loss for Canada. Political.
  • Jeremiah Jones and other Black Canadian Soldiers

    Many black soldiers faced discrimination during the war. Yet, during the Battle of Vimy Ridge, Jeremiah Jones and other black Canadian soldiers fought together and were apart of Canada's greatest victory. Jones was recommended for a Distinguished Conduct Medal, and they proved the black mans worth in the war. This was definitely progress for Canada and the black Canadian soldiers. Social

    War Measures Act was created

    A member of the provincial government made a prejudice statement that led to the passing of this act. “Enemy Aliens” (people that were born in enemy countries) were being arrested, imprisoned, sent to camps, or even deported without the need of trial. This wasn't a progress for immigrants but this act also gave some progress for women. Political
  • The Battle of Vimy Ridge

    One of Canada's greatest victories and started the independence of the country. Although, this huge success was because of the sacrifices made, the 3 598 lost and 7 000 casualties.   • The Halifax Explosion

    The Halifax harbour was busy, one boat came in carrying explosive material that collided with a boat carrying war supplies. This massive explosion destroyed the whole city, killing 2000 people. This was a major decline for Canada. Economy
  • Prime Minister Borden Extends Women's Voting Rights

    Once all the men had left for war, the women had to take over their jobs to keep up with the war supply. The Canadian government felt that if women were taking the jobs, they could vote in the honour of their husbands, fathers, sons, etc. Borden extended the voting rights to women 21 and over, yet not all women were included. This was a step for women, although it was very small and racist. Political.

    The OBU General Strike

    In Winnipeg, workers were angry with their working conditions and low wage. The One Big Union was formed (this was illegal at this time) and 30,000 workers went on strike that day, and it resulted in 7 arrests. Protests had become violent and had involved the Royal Northwest Mountain Police, resulting in more deaths and injuries. After this nothing changed and they went back to these poor conditions.   • Llandovery Castle

    The Llandovery Castle was a hospital ship that carried the wounded back to Canada, these ships were stated in the rules of the war that they must be spared. Yet, a German submarine torpedoed the ship, 234 out of the 258 on board were lost. This was a hard decline for Canada and a heavy loss. Economical.
  • Paris Peace Conference

    This conference marks the separation from Britain. We also signed the Treaty of the Versailles, which ended WWI. Huge success for Canada! Political
