    The Padlock law was put in place to protect citizens from communist propaganda and limit their knowledge on communism
    The law was passed by the government of Maurice Duplessis
    The act prohibited the use of buildings to propagate communism or bolshevism and also prohibited the use of any text to propagate communism or bolshevism

    Spies in Canada
    On Spetember 5 1945 Igor Gouzenko released 109 documents on soviet spy actvities in the west
    He exposed plans to steal nuclear weapons and plans to plant sleeper agents in canada
    Gouzenko and his family were given another identity so they could live a safe life
    This was important to canada because it may have saved us from russian spies getting information about our nuclear weapons

    Berlin Blockade
    The Soviets blocked off all allied access points to west berlin inculding roads railways and waterways
    The allies made over 200 000 airlifts in order to get supplies to the west berliners
    Many allied airforces teamed up to complete these supply drops

    Alliance made originally by 11 countries that meant if any of the members were attacked other members would aid in defending them
    Canada was one of these members

    It essentialy was a war between south korea and north korea
    South Korea was supported by the united nations and north korea was supported by the soviet union and china for a little while
    After south korea was invaded by north korea the united nations sent trops (mostly american) to help the south korean people
    After some back and forth the old border was reastablished and a DMZ was created
    26 000 canadian troops were sent to korea

    The Distant Early Warning line was a series of radars in northern Canada Alaska that were put there by canada and the states
    It was made to detect incoming soviet bombers and detect if a land invasion was coming

    It was a mutual defense treaty between 8 communist states in central and eastern europe
    essentialy it was opposite to NATO

    UN peacekeeping is used "to help countries torn by conflict to create conditions for lasting peace"
    The suez crisis was a war with egypt on one side and Isreal, France and Britain on the other side
    The UN tried to get Isreal france and britain to withdrawel from egypt.
    Canadian Lester Pearson won the nobel peace prize for his idea of "Peacekeepers" he wanted to deploy troops to keep peace between countries

    Many americans that did not want to be drafted fled to canada
    Its estimated that around 50 000 to 125 000 men immigrated to canada from the us to avoid the draft

    It was made to warn about incoming soviet missiles and planes

    Essentialy the soviets won the space race

    The avro arrow was a Canadian "delta-winged interceptor aircraft"
    It was very technically and aerodynamicly advanced
    Although with political controversey it was cancelled and it put avro out of buisness

    The Soiets were building nuclear missile on cuba aimed at the states
    The states built a blockade and ordered that the missiles be dismantled and sent back tothe soviet union
    This was the closest it got to nuclear anihilation
    The crisis was resolved by Kennedy and the soviet leader

    Games were tense because of the cold war

    On this day a city that had been divided for 30 years was now unified
