    A NEW BEGINNING
    Hello, my name is Thomas Parker. I have just moved to British North America with my father, mother, and older brother, from United Kingdom. It was a long ship ride, but we finally have made it here. I think I am going to like it here in British North America. My family and I have landed in a place called Kingston, Upper Canada. I am 14 years old at the time.

    FIRE WOOD
    Winter is setteling in. Father, and William, my brother, go to the forest everyday to collect firewood. Father said that i could come today. the cold winter breeze sent shivers through mine and william's bones. However, Father did not seem to mind the cold. When we got to the forest Father and William began to chop the trees with their axes. Father gave me an axe, but I just cut the big logs into little pieces of wood. Father said I could cot down trees when I was a few years older.

    VISITING REALITIVES
    Today, we visited cousin Fredrick's house for Christmas. I thought we were going to go to their house by sled, but Father said we were going to walk. When we got to their house it was almost dark. So, after dinner we decided that, instead of walking back to our house in the dark, we would spend the night at Cousin Fredrick's house. for dinner we had a great feast. we had chicken, corn, and even turkey. In the morning we started walking back to our house.

    JESUITS' COLLEGE
    While father was reading the newspaper today, I read over his shoulder and found out that a Jesuits' college had opened in Montreal. The name of the college was Collège Sainte-Marie de Montréal. the college has an english section as well as a french section. The english section called the school, St. Mary's College. the ollege offered primary, secondary, and college studies. The paper also said that a portion of the college was a church. I was fancinated by that college.

    Father had told me now that I was 18 I was well old enough to find a job. That was a couple of days back, now I have a job. I cut down trees for firewood and sell the firewood for a good profit. Most of my profit is made in the winter time. However, people still do need firewood for cooking and even for cold nights. Now that I have a good job, next year I will be ready for marriage.

    Today was a great day. I got married today to a very pretty woman. Our wedding was at evening time in our local church. Getting prepared took a lot of time. I had to wear a suit and tie. It was very uncomfortable, but I looked very good and handsome according to Mother.

    We just had our first child and it is crying my ears out. We named our child Christopher. Isabella, my wife, is always trying to get Christopher to stop crying. The only time he is not crying is when he is asleep. He is 1 week old at the time. When he is asleep he curls up and he looks just like a newborn lamb.

    Today I was reading the newspaper, and I read about a college that opened. The name of the college is Trinity College. Trinity College had opened in Toronto, Upper Canada. The college's chancellor was Bill Graham. It's campus was in an urban area.

    VISITING MOTHER AND FATHER
    Today, we visited my Mother and Father. Our home is only a kilometres away from ours. We went by walking. We left at evening time. It was still early evening when we got ther. Mother and Father were thrilled to see us and little Christopher. We had a great dinner with them. Then we headed back home. Christopher had lots of fun too playing with Mother, and Father.

    Today was Christopher's birthday. We had a small party for him with a great meal after. He is four years old now. Isabella made a very nice meal for him. Father and Mother came over to our house for Christopher's birthday, although we were going to go to their house. We had a great meal and we all sang happy birthday to Christopher.

    BYTOWN RENAMED
    Today I was in the village and I heard two people talking about a new city named Ottawa. I asked one of them what was Ottawa. They told me that Bytown had been renamed as Ottawa today. They said that Ottawa was just a bit north of Kingston, the town I livei n right now. I personally thought that Bytown was a much better name for the city than Ottawa.

    Today I was having breakfast when I read about a new village being built in Embrun. Embrun's economy was most based on lumber and firewood. The village's soil was too moist for good agriculture. Ido nto think I would want to live there. It was a very small village and with bad agriculture it would be hard to grow vegetables or fruit there.

    CANADA'S CAPITAL
    Today was an important day in canadian polotics. Ottawa was chosen as the new capital of Canada. I thought that Toronto or Kingston should have been named the capital. Both the cities had great economies that could help Canada grow and become more wealthy. Queen Victoria had chosen Ottawa as Canada's capital federal city.

    Today in the news paper I read about the death of a politician named Robert Baldwin. He ws born on May 12 1804 in York Upper Canada. He died in Toronto, Canada West. Robert Baldwin's grandfather had moved to Upper Canada from Ireland in 1799. Robert Baldwin had died at the age of 54. He was a member of the Reformer party.
  • TEACHING CHRISTOPHER

    TEACHING CHRISTOPHER
    Christopher is 9 years old at the time and I thought that it would be good to start teaching him how to collect firewood. So the next morning I woke him up early, so he could help me collect the firewood. We walked to the forest with our axes. the snow made it a little difficult to walk but we managed. I first showed him how to cut down a tree. Then I got him to split the big logs into small pieces. He looked like he was having fun, but he did find it hard to lift the axe.

    VICTORA BRIDGE
    Today was the opening of the Victoria Bridge in Montreal. The bridge spans the St. Lawerence River. It was the longest bridge in the world. The cheif designer of the bridge was an engineer named James Hodges. The bridge was approximetely 3 km long. The bridge connects Montreal to the south shore city of Saint-Lambert.

    MY BIRTHDAY
    Today is my birthday. I feel much much much older than I really am. I am 30 years old but I feel like I am 50 or 60. We had a small party and we had some cake and a great meal fit for a king. Father and Mother came over to our house, so did William, his wife Catherine, and his daughter Sarah. Sarah and Christopher went off to play. Christopher had gotten me a brand new axe from the village. After having cake all us adults talked, and the kids played. Around sunset time everyone started to leave.

    Today we visited William's house because it was Christmas. When we got there we saw Father, Mother, William, William's wife and daughter, Cousin Fredrick, his wife and his son. William's house was very crowded but it was not too crowded once everyone found a place to sit. After we had a great feast for dinner, we all sat down and talked. the children went off and played. It reminded me of when I was a little boy and we used to go to cousin Fredrick's house for christmas dinner.

    Today is Isabella's birthday and we have planned a surprise birthday party. When Isabella came back Cristopher and I jumped out and yelled surprise. She was very happy and she thanked us, but the cake we made was horrible. Anyway, she said it was the best birthday she had ever had. She is now 27.

    Today I read in the newspaper about the Charlottetown conference. It was being held in Charlotte town Prince Edward Island. It was for the representatives of the colonies of British North America. The conference was to discuss Canadian Confederation. It was going to be held between September 1 to September 9th.

    Today I read in the newspaper about the death of a man named Augustin-Norbert Morin. He was a lawyer, a judge, a politician, and a joint premier of the province of Canada. He worked as a newspaper man to earn money for studying law. For some time he worked in the office of Denis-Benjamin Viger as a clerk. By 1828 he practiced law independently.

    Today I went to the village and I saw posters for the London Conference. The conference was being held in the United Kingdom, where I was born. It was the final conference in a series of conferences that led to Canadian Confederation in 1867. Seventeen daligates form the Province of Canada, Nova Scotia, and New Brunswick.

    Today, John A. McDonald married his second wife. Her name was Agnes Macdonald and she was born in Jamacia. She was John A. McDonald's second wife. His first wife had died of illness. Agnes had been raised in both countries, Jamacia, and England. They first met in 1856 because Agnes's brother worked with John A. McDonald.

    Today the Royal College of Dental Surgeons of Ontario had opened. It was the first college of its kind that I had ever heard of. The college tought its students how to clean people's teeth. The college was established by the Ontario Statue. The Royal College of Dental Surgeons of Ontario or RCDSO for short was the governing body of dentists in Ontario.

    Today there was a new person that become the Minister of Finance. The name of that person was Sir Francis Hincks. He was born on December 14 1807. He was born in Cork, Ireland. He was part of the political party called Reformer. He moved from Ireland To York in 1832. He setup an importing buisness there.

    Today, Manitoba had a new premier. His name was Alfred Boyd. He was born in England. He was the first premier of Manitoba. He was born on September 20th in 1835. By 1869 he was a very wealthy person. He arrived in Rupert's Land in 1858 and started by being a merchant and trader.

    Today Christopher got married to a woman he has not told me about since he was 16. I finally got to see her today. Her name was Elizabeth. Christopher and Elizabeth looked amazing together. Mother and Father were at the wedding, so was William and his family, and Cousin Fredrick and his family. Isabella and I were very thrilled.

    Today, I became a geandfather and Christopher, a father. His daughter was only 2 days old and she was the cutest thing ever. Christopher and Elizabeth had named their daughter Mary. Becoming a grandfather made me feel old. Looking at little Mary reminded me of when Christopher was born.

    Today, John A. McDonald resigned as primeminister of Canada. I was shocked by this because he was my favourite political leader and a very good primeminister. Alexander Mckenzie was replacing him as primeminister of Canada. He was born on January 28th, 1822 in Logierait, Scotland. He was Canada's second primeminister but not as great as John A. McDonald.

    Today is Mary's birthday and we all have planned a birthday party for her. William and his family, and Mother and Father also came over for the party. The cake that Elizabeth had made tasted delicious. Mary is now 3 years old and she can she can say a few words but not talk completely. She loves to play with anything and anyone she can find.

    Today, the Supreme Court of Canada opened. It was the highest court in Canada, the final court of appeals in the canadian justice system. It was built in Ottawa,Ontario,Canada. The first bills to create a supreme court in Canada were in 1869-1870. The Supreme Court of Canada is combined of 9 judges.
