Development of the Bionic Eye

  • 2002: Mark Humayun's First Idea

    The inventor of the Bionic Eye Mark Humayun came up with an idea to invent the bionic eye because his grandmother was going blind.
  • 2002-2004: The First Generation Implant

    6 subjects had a bionic eye implant by Mark Humayun threw out 2002-2004. The first generation implant had 16 electrodes.
  • 2012: Early Prototype Australia

    Bionic Vision Australia implanted an early prototype device in three patients with retinitis pigmentosa. The three patients were able to see flashes of light.
  • 2013: BVA Early Prototype

    BVA researchers connected an external camera to the early prototype implant. Patients were able to recognise basic shapes, letters and numbers.
  • 2014: BVA Early Prototype

    In a laboratory setting, patients used a portable system and camera to see how well they could navigate around objects and to see how they cope in an every day environment.
