People are meant to attach lightning rods to the tops of their buildings so when lightning strikes the building, the lightning runs through the ground, leaving the people and the building undamaged. By 1752, most of the building in Philadelphia had them. Below is the first lightning rod he made.

When lightning struck a building in the 1700s, when buildings weren't like they are today, it was not common for the entire building to catch on fire or explode. Lightning rods have saved many lives and buildings, like the time lightning struck the Empire State Buildings.

If Ben Franklin wasn't as creative as he is, then we might not have many technological advances that we have today. Like the glass harmonica, as seen below.

We can see this today whenever we look at the skyscrapers right around us. every single one of them has a lightning rod on top of them.
