    Emperor Huayna Capac´s Death
    Emperor Huayna Capac (Atahualpa’s Father) dies from a plague. This was likely smallpox brought by the Spanish conquistadors. A large portion of the Inca population will die from smallpox and other diseases over the next several years.

    The Inca Civil War

    The Inca Civil War was fought between two brothers, Huáscar and Atahualpa, sons of Huayna Capac, over the succession to the throne of the Inca Empire. It began in 1529, and lasted until 1532. Atahualpa won the war.

    Atahualpa becomes the new Inca Emperor after defeating Huáscar. He was honored that role at Cajamarca, Peru. He was the last emperor of the Inca.

    Francisco Pizarro met Atahualpa in Vilcabamba which is also known as Machu Picchu. It is the most fateful place in the new world. Pizzaro invited him to attend a feast.

    Melting of the Ransom Room
    Atahualpa had a room called "Ransom Room" where he kept all of his gold and silver. The Incas made statues with that gold and silver. When the Spaniards came, they made the Indians melt down all of the statues into gold and silver ingots.

    The Battle of Cajamarca

    The Battle of Cajamarca was the unexpected ambush of the Inca ruler Atahualpa by a small Spanish force led by Francisco Pizarro, on November 16, 1532. The Spanish killed thousands of Atahualpa's counsellors, commanders and unarmed attendants in the great plaza of Cajamarca.

    Atahualpa was the last Sapa Inca in the Inca Empire of Tawantinsuyu. His empire fell after it was conquered by the Spanish.

    Death

    Atahualpa was horrified, since the Inca believed that the soul would not be able to go on to the afterlife if the body were burned. Friar Valverde said if he agreed to convert to Catholicism, he could convince Pizarro to commute the sentence. Atahualpa agreed to be baptized into the Catholic faith. He was given the name Francisco Atahualpa in honor of Francisco Pizarro. In accordance with his request, he was executed by strangling with a garrote on 26 July 1533. He was the last Incan Emperor.
