    The Medieval Period

    During the Middle Ages, art was categorized in three main styles: Byzantine, Romanesque, and Gothic. Most works of art could only be commissioned by the very rich, and a majority were done in the patronage of the church and are religious in subject matter. This reflects the society of the time — the church heavily influenced politics and day-to-day activities centered around the local church and church holidays. Popular artists and writers included Simone Martini and Nicola Pisano.

    Art during the Renaissance reflected the new ideas and attitudes introduced in this period of history. New ideas such as humanism put the focus on human interest, needs, and abilities. These new ideas changed how artists painted and what they chose to paint. The Renaissance if often divided into two periods the Early Renaissance and the High Renaissance. Popular artists in this era included Donatello, Michelangelo, and Leonardo da Vinci.

    The Baroque style focused on religious paintings in the Catholic Church. The art style was much more emotional and dramatic, full of life and movement. The art usually featured action and movement, people fighting, angels flying, and people cowering in fear. This art reflected the dramatic religious tensions of the age.     The Rococo Period occurred in early to late 18th century France. The movement influenced the many aspects of art included painting, sculpture, and literature. The art reflected the rise in the influential and wealthy middle class in France. The Rococo period of art is often characterized by an elegant and refined style. Popular Rococo artists included François Boucher and Jean-Baptiste Greuze.

    The Neoclassicism Period

    Neoclassicism was the predominant movement in European art during the late 18th and early 19th centuries. The Neoclassical movement wanted to try to reflect the forms of classical art from ancient Greek and Rome. This period reflected the European Age of Enlightenment because many of the ancient Greek and Roman ideals were a part of the Age of Enlightenment. Popular artists included Anton Raphael​ Mengs and Jacques-Louis David.

    Impressionism arose when young French artists chose to rebel against the art critics to form a new style of art all on their own. Impressionism was all about capturing a specific moment in time. The art was heavily focused on light and color of a moment, which is why they often painted scenes outdoors.The art reflects the want for freedom in this era. Popular artists include Claude Monet and Edgar Degas.
