Indian Independence
Parliament of the United Kingdom partitioned British India into the two new independent dominions of India and Pakistan. The Act received the royal assent on 18 July 1947, and Pakistan came into being on August 14, and India on August 15, as two new countries. -
Creation of Israel
Zionists moved back to Isreal in order to create a Jewish state. The neighboring countries invaded Israel, but instead lost even more land. Muslims and Jews continue to fight over this holy land, but Israel as a state was finally recognized. -

The Soviet Union cut off all traffic and water to West Berlin. American and British officials flew in supplies for 11 months and had planes arriving every 3 minutes. -
Arab-Israeli Conflict of 1956
Israeli forces invaded Egypt's Sinai peninsula. It gained territory of the Gaza Strip. Later, Israel gave the territory back in order to avoid more conflict with Egypt. -
Launch of Sputnik
The Soviet Union and the United States were technologically advancing and were trying to race eachother to get to space. The Soviets were able to send "Suptnik", the first unmanned satellite, into space. -
The Cuban Missile Crisis
The Soviets were secretly building missile sites in Cuba. These missiles were viewed as a threat by the United States. The U.S. demanded their removal and they put blockades around Cuba to prevent Soviets from installing more missiles. It was a threat of a nuclear war. The Soviets agreed to remove the missiles if the U.S. didnt invade Cuba. The crisis lasted 14 days. -
The 6 Day War
Israel launched an air assault that crippled Arab air capability. Israel was able to capture Golan Heights, and Jerusalem's Old City. The war was over after only 6 days. -

The Soviets invaded Afghanistan. As president of the united States, Ronald Regan increased the defense spending. He imposed the Strategic Defense Initiative, nicknamed "Star Wars". -

Citizens wanted reform and bagan to protest. It was a student-led demonstration and troops began gunning people down. It was a complete massacre. Troops opened fire with tanks and rifles and numerous people died.
