APUSH imperialism timeline

  • Missionaries

    Anglo saxons had “religious duty” to other lands to spread Christianity, they helped encourage United States involvement in foreign affairs. Helped expand United States as it emerged us into Africa, Asia and Pacific Islander cultures as the United States became involved in foreign affairs.
  • Naval power growth

    United States naval strategists got congress to finance the construction of steel ships, encouraged acquisition of overseas islands. This helped the United States expand because we could acquire lands by sea, through naval power.
  • Cleveland, Olney, and the Monroe Doctrine

    The United States kicked Britain out of Venezuela, and said they were violating the Monroe Doctrine. This made Venezuela grateful of us. Expanded United States by broadening our allies.
  • Yellow Press

    Promoted war for the United States. It exaggerated false accounts of Spanish atrocities in Cuba. This lead the United States to intervene further with Spain.
  • Open Door Policy in China

    John Hay proposed a policy to countries that had spheres of influence in china to accept his ope donor policy allowing every country to have equal trading privileges in china. No country denied it which meant success for United States, meaning for trade and furthering imperialism.
  • Cuba and Platt Amendment

    Required Cuba to agree to never sign treaty with foreign power that impaired its independence. Allow US to intervene in Cuba’s affairs to preserve it’s independence and maintain law and order. Finally, allow united states to keep naval bases in Cuba, one permanent base at Guantanamo bay. This expanded United States by keeping control over a foreign country.
  • Building the Canal

    Hundreds of laborers lost their lives, Latin Americans were resentful of the build. Congress voted to pay Colombia 25 million dollars for its loss of panama. The canal allowed for quicker and increased trading as ships didn't have to sail around South America, instead just sail right through.
