  • Early Colonialism

    Europeans had a religious influence by spreading their form of Christianity. They gained political power by expanding their influences throughout the world.
  • Later Colonialism

    Spanish and Portuguese empires declined. Other Europeans countries launched a second wave of colonization. The wave focused on controlling lands in Africa.
  • Berlin Conference

    Conference with countries with the purpose of forming state boundaries in Africa.
  • Creating of the United Nations

    The United Nation was created to support the demands of subject people in colonies
  • The Cold War

    The Berlin Wall collapsed and the Soviet Union broke up. The end of the Cold War broke up Europe into East and West Europe.
  • Civil Wars in the Developing World

    Colonial territories in Africa gained independence. However, since independence was won by the colonies rather than by cultural groups, the boundaries imposed remained newly Independence states. Because political boarders had conflicts, one country started spilling into another.
  • Collapse of Communism

    Union of Soviet Socialist Republics broke up. This contained 15 states.
  • Modern Colonial Independence Movements

    Within a century after the Berlin Conference, Europeans colonial territories won independence.
